Shramik Bharti is a not-for-profit, grassroots development organization, headquartered in Kanpur, India which undertakes activities primarily aimed at eradicating poverty with a particular emphasis on empowering women and disadvantaged communities. It was established in 1986 and works with urban and rural communities in Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya, Fatehpur, Jalaun, Barabanki, Bhadohi and Chandauli districts of Uttar Pradesh and Ferozepur & Amritsar districts of Punjab.[2]

History

In the early 1980s, Kanpur was a hub of mills (Swadeshi, British India Corporation etc.), and was known as the Manchester of the East. Around 10-12 of the city’s famous mills employed close to a 100,000 workers at that time. However, in 1982, recession forced many of these mills to scale down or shut down operations completely. Losing their jobs overnight hit the workers badly. They weren’t educated enough to find an alternative source of living overnight; and they had mouths to feed at home.[1] [3]

This scenario prompted Ganesh Pandey, who was working as a scientist at the Ministry of Defense, to get involved with the Mazdoor Andolan. Having actively participated in college unions, he knew his heart lied with working for trade unions. Eventually he took voluntary retirement after two decades of work at the Ministry; to work fulltime for the Andolan. At this time, Usha Varkey was involved with a children’s theatre group called Kishlay. Through the theatre group, she came in contact with Ganesh Pandey and the other founders of Shramik Bharti; who, as part of awareness and advocacy activities with the Andolan, were preparing a play on the topic of rights of workers for the unions. Soon after, Usha Varkey too quit her job as a teacher for the Andolan. So, it was their association with trade unions and working for laborers that brought all of them together and start Shramik Bharti. [1]

Programs

Sodic Land Reclamation Program

The increased of sodium raises the alkalinity and visibly renders the soil white in colour. The Sodification of soil leads to desertification and susceptible to erosion due to water and wind. In Uttar Pradesh, the farmers possess smaller land holdings and this accumulation of salt brings in the vicious cycle of poverty, unemployment and migration. For Shramik Bharti, the work to reclaim the Sodic Lands began with the support of Uttar Pradesh Land Development Corporation & World Bank in the districts of Kanpur and Kanpur Dehat in 1995.[4] [5]

Water, Sanitation& Hygiene

Shramik Bharti had taken up an Action Research project on WASH in rural areas of Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh with the support of Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust along with International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW) as research partner. They also worked on sanitation issue in 10 Gram Panchayats of Ekona Block of Shravasti district with the support of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). WaterAid India has partnered with Shramik Bharti for Swachh Kanpur, Swasth Kanpur- as a part of their urban and rural WASH projects. Shramik Bharti in its concerted efforts from 2008 has capacitated citizen leaders from 200 slums of Kanpur to take their water & sanitation rights.[6] [7] [8] [9]

Community Radio Station – Waqt Ki Awaaz

Waqt Ki Awaaz, the community radio station is promoted by Shramik Bharti since October 2009 in village Bairi Dariyav of Maitha block in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh. This platform is used to initiate discussion and raise issues of rural lives of Kanpur Dehat as diverse as open defecation, alcohol addiction, elderly people, girl education and diseases. The station broadcasts 7 hours daily in three sessions: morning, afternoon and evening sessions. The airwaves reach 300 villages covering a population of about 300,000 in a radius of 15 km.[10] [11][12][13]

Community Health

Community Partnerships for Safe Motherhood (CPSM) is one of the flagship program of Shramik Bharti in collaboration with PRIME II. The CPSM model relies on democratically elected community health committees and trained village health guides. The committees and guides register pregnant women, facilitate access to prenatal and postpartum care during visits by public-sector auxiliary nurse-midwives, help identify transportation resources and establish emergency loan mechanisms. Home birth teams (often the pregnant woman and her mother-in-law) attend training workshops led by the village health guides, in which they learn to recognize and respond to critical complications of labor, delivery and newborn care. Integration of postpartum family planning counseling and services with improved maternal health care is emphasized in the CPSM model. Developed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, a PRIME II supporting institution, the six Home-Based Life-Saving Skills (HBLSS) modules used in the training workshops focus on changing deep-seated beliefs and behaviors regarding prenatal and postpartum care, paying special attention to postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal sepsis. Highly visual “Take Action Cards” facilitate sustained recall of the HBLSS messages. This program operated in 11 villages and 29 hamlets of Maitha Block, a rural region near the city of Kanpur.[14][15][16]
