The Mosque of Arnaūt prior to its destruction.

The Mosque of Arnā’ūt was a complex in Tal Afar, Iraq.

The complex

The first part of the complex, a shrine, was built around the grave of Sayyid Ar-Mamut Baba. A green dome was erected over the zarih enclosing the grave. The shrine later expanded to become a mosque, and a cemetery was next to the shrine.

Destruction of the mosque and shrine

The mosque was destroyed by ISIL in 2014 as part of a plan to destroy historic shrines in Tal Afar, Mosul and Nineveh.[1]Explosives were planted at the tomb, completely destroying the green dome as well as the shrine under it and several graves in the cemetery next to the shrine. However, a minor part of the complex was not destroyed.
