Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed by Danish indie studio Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. It released on Steam in Early Access and Xbox One Preview on February 28, 2018 and is developed in Unreal Engine 4.[1][2][3][4]

Gameplay

Deep Rock Galactic is a 1-4 player cooperative[5] first-person shooter video game where players work together while exploring procedurally generated cave systems.[6]

Players take on the role of four space dwarves assigned to various missions, which include many objectives such as mining specific minerals, stealing alien eggs or retrieve lost equipment. These are usually the main objective, required to complete the mission. It is possible to complete a secondary objective (usually collecting other materials or items) to receive extra credits, which are used to improve the player's weapons and abilities of the classes.

The game takes place in dark caves on Hoxxes IV, a dangerous planet full of minerals and biomes. Biomes are where the missions take place, and range from galactic salt mines to radioactive tunnels.[1][6] The main antagonists are various swarms of alien arachnids called Glyphids.[1][7][8]

Classes

Currently there are four playable classes to choose from. They all have unique weapons and abilities, which encourage different playstyles, but all of them are equipped with a pickaxe and a few grenades. Players can choose classes while in the main lobby by using one of the computers that are inside the rooms. They also can customize and upgrade their weapons and tools as they level up.

Engineer

The engineer has a shotgun, a grenade launcher, the ability to build up to 2 sentry guns and a platform gun that shoots walkable platforms.

Gunner

A soldier/heavy class that is equipped with a minigun and a pistol. He has the highest damage potential, which is balanced by his lack of mobility. He also has access to a Shield generator that can protect him and his allies from ranged attacks for a limited amount of time. He also has a zipline gun which shoots ziplines that can be used by the team.

Driller

A miner class, the driller is equipped with power drills, which mine much faster than a pickaxe and can easily dig through any material. He is also equipped with a flamethrower (which can damage enemies over time), a pistol and a satchel charge.

Scout

A class that is meant to get to and around places fast, the scout is equipped with an assault rifle, a double-barreled shotgun and a grappling gun. The Scout class has the most mobility as he can get almost anywhere with his grappling gun. He also can provide support with his flare gun, which shoots very bright flares.

Reception

The Early Access version of Deep Rock Galactic was well received by critics, who praised the game's atmosphere and challenging levels. Multiple reviewers compared parts of the experience of Deep Rock Galactic to Minecraft and Left 4 Dead.[1][6]
