:Heh, Congrats Jimmy ;). I remember when I uploaded the original from the Foundation website to commons, and it almost got deleted because we couldn't find evidence of you releasing it under cc-by-sa ;). Its still a great photo though and I'm glad to see it made FP :). Mifter (talk) 04:33, 10 August 2009 (UTC) |

I know this is a tired issue. And I despise the fact that I have to preface my remarks to fend off talk page stalkers. But people, do not remove this if your name is not Jimbo Wales. You have no right to do so. For that matter, Jimbo please do not simply ignore me as you do to so many other people. My question is this: |
Do you have any shred of evidence that backs up your claim to be the founder (vs co-founder) of wikipedia? So far, most of us have seen none.<b style="font-size:bigger;color:#900">D</b>rew <b style="font-size:bigger;color:#900">S</b>mith <i style="font-size:smaller;color:#ccc">What I've done</i> 14:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC) |

:'Most have us have seen none'? I'm not sure that's correct - as far as I'm aware, there's only one person claiming to be a 'co-founder', and that person was *employed* by Jimbo. There's plenty of evidence that this was an employer/employee relationship, and that the employer had the idea of developing an encyclopaedia prior to hiring this person. It is therefore difficult to see how (except by his having briefly, generously, injudiciously, sharing the 'founder' tag around his employees) an employee can be rightly described as a founder. If Jimbo had had a partner, and they jointly started a company, and they simultaneously decided to create something then maybe they'd be 'co-founders'. But that's not the case here. |
:But you're right about one thing. It's a tired issue. Let it go..... Little grape (talk) 15:32, 10 August 2009 (UTC) |

::Jimbo has a sock? Or maybe its just another talk page stalker talking for him... either way: |
::It was Larry Sangers idea to create wikipedia; initially to funnel articles into nupedia. I don't know jimbo's exact words to sanger when sanger proposed this, but he basically said "hm? oh, yeah, whatever." |
::Later, in press releases he called sanger the founder of wikipedia. Wikipedia grew, and he began calling sanger the co-founder. Almost as soon as sanger left the project, jimbo began saying he was the sole founder of wikipedia. |
::Not to mention the fact that It wasn't Jimbos idea. So what if he *employed* Sanger. It was still Sangers idea. That makes Jimbo the funding for wikipedia, at best. |
::Now to all you stalkers, please go away. I want to speak to Jimbo himself about this.<b style="font-size:bigger;color:#900">D</b>rew <b style="font-size:bigger;color:#900">S</b>mith <i style="font-size:smaller;color:#ccc">What I've done</i> 15:41, 10 August 2009 (UTC) |

:::You can't have it both ways Drew - if you don't want other people to contribute then email the man, don't showboat on his page. Likewise, don't make claims such as "most of us have seen none" and then expect 'most of us' to allow you to speak in our name. |
:::The idea for a free encyclopaedia seems to have predated Sanger's employment by some months. The Nupedia article states: 'In the autumn of 1999, Wales began thinking about an online encyclopedia built by volunteers and, in January 2000, hired Sanger to oversee its development'. That seems to me to be fairly conclusive - through cost problems and because of dismal productivity he later started casting around for a better html editor, changed the rules on contributors, and decided upon the wiki format. There was at that point only one decision-maker, and that would have been the man (the employer) paying the bills - *not* the employee! Sanger was the hired hand. A valued hired hand, but at the end of the day the buck stopped with one guy - Wales. If you disagree with that view then go argue it on Nupedia, because otherwise it looks like you're trolling here for a reaction. Oh, wait..... Ok, I'm out..... ::::Sole-foundership is a fringe view. Regardless, Drew, this is best emailed to Jimmy. Discussing it on the project serves no meaningful purpose on the project, as consensus has been established and there is consistency (in article space) project-wide. New revenue stream?
It's a long-shot, but forewarned is forearmed. An idle thought crossed my mind that AIs being tested on Wikipedia could harm the project, so I proposed this policy Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Artificial Intelligence User Accounts. There is some uncertainty about the seriousness of the motivation, but looking at it objectively, it does make some sense. Even if it at first sounds off the wall.
