Amélie Mauresmo won her first Wimbledon title, defeating Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4.[1] It was her second and last Grand Slam title, having won the Australian Open earlier in the year; on that occasion, Henin-Hardenne had retired due to a stomach bug. Mauresmo also became the first French woman to win Wimbledon since Suzanne Lenglen in 1925.[2] With her loss, Henin-Hardenne missed the chance of completing a career Grand Slam.[1]

Venus Williams was the defending champion, but she lost in the third round against Jelena Janković.[3] With Serena Williams not competing due to a knee injury,[4] it marked the first Wimbledon women's final since 1999 not to feature either of the Williams sisters.[5]
