Alexander Zverev was the defending champion,[1] but lost to Rafael Nadal in the final, 1–6, 6–1, 3–6. It was Nadal's 32nd record-extending ATP Masters title. By winning the title, Nadal regained the ATP no. 1 singles ranking from Roger Federer.[2]

After failing to defend his finalist points from the previous year, Novak Djokovic fell outside the Top 20 for the first time since October 2, 2006.
