Elina Svitolina was the two-time defending champion, but lost in the second round to Victoria Azarenka.[1]

Karolína Plíšková won the title, defeating Johanna Konta in the final, 6–3, 6–4.

Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep were in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the beginning of the tournament.[2] Osaka retained the top ranking following Halep's loss in the second round.

Serena Williams made her return to the event since winning the title in 2016. She withdrew from her second round match due to an alleged knee injury marking her third consecutive withdrawal from a tournament. She has not finished a tournament since losing in the 2019 Australian Open quarterfinals. [3]
