Alexander Zverev was the defending champion[1] but lost in the quarterfinals to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Novak Djokovic won the title, defeating Tsitsipas in the final, 6–3, 6–4. With the win, Djokovic tied Nadal's record with 33 Masters 1000 singles titles.

This tournament marked Roger Federer's first clay court tournament since the 2016 Rome Masters, as well as the last tournament of David Ferrer's professional tennis career.[2]
