Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion.[1] He is vying to become the first man born in the 1990s to win multiple major singles titles.[2]

Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Casper Ruud are all in contention for the ATP number 1 singles ranking at the beginning of the tournament.[3][4] Since Nadal is not defending any points from last year’s tournament, all the other contenders will need to at least reach the final to have an opportunity to claim the No. 1 spot. Alcaraz is vying to become the youngest world number 1 in ATP history.

Nadal is vying to extend his all-time record for the most major men's singles titles and tie Serena Williams' Open Era record for the most singles titles overall, with 23. Furthermore, Nadal is attempting to join Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer as the record-holders for the most US Open men's singles titles in the Open Era, with 5.

It marks the first time[citation needed] in history that the tournament's draw includes three players who won the tournament on their last appearance; Medvedev in 2021, Dominic Thiem in 2020, and Nadal in 2019 respectively.[5]
