The 38th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from February 12 to 23, 1988.[2] The festival opened with musical film Linie 1 by Reinhard Hauff.[2] The Golden Bear was awarded to the Chinese film Red Sorghum directed by Zhang Yimou.[3]

The retrospective dedicated to dedicated to colour films titled The History of Colour Film was shown at the festival.[4] Originally German actor Gert Fröbe was selected as Jury President but later he had to decline due to illness, after which Moritz de Hadeln appointed the Italian film critic Guglielmo Biraghi as the Jury President.[2]
