Eleftheroupoli F.C., officially known as A.E. Eleftheroupoli (Template:Lang-el, Athlitiki Enosi Eleftheroupoleos), the "Athletic Union of Eleftheroupoli", is a Greek association football club based in Nea Ionia, a suburban town in the Athens prefecture, Greece.[2] The club currently competes in the Athens Second Division.[3]

History

A.E. Eleftheroupoli is one of the oldest Greek football clubs and was established in 1929 by A. Neofytou, L. Dimitropoulos, A. Konstantinidis, N. Nikolaou, Ch. Theodorou, L. Konstantinidis, Th. Kiriakou, A. Nikolaou, G. Stefanidis, D. Kountouris, P. Tsakonas, and P. Tevekelis.[4] The team managed to win the local municipality championship three times from 1933 to 1936 and was recognized by the court of Athens as an official club.[5] The club gained many new fans due to that success. In 1937, the club was merged with Hope of Nea Ionia football club to form a stronger team. In 1939, the club was recognized by the Hellenic Football Federation and the Athens Football Clubs Association, while at the same time, it competed in the Football League 2. Also, it dominated the national second division from the late 50s until the early 60s. Over the years the club's reputation deteriorated, due to its perennial presence in the regional Athens leagues.[6] The club produced many talented players, such as Stelios Skevofilakas, Panagiotidis, Giorgos Mageiras, Kountouris, Xenos, Mavridopoulos, Vlantis, Sevastiadis, Mitilinaios, Tryfon Tzanetis, and others, that were later transferred to higher reputation football clubs of Athens.[7]

Stadium

The club's home ground is located in Nea Ionia, Athens. The municipal stadium of Nea Ionia[8] is the home ground for A.E. Eleftheroupoli from the day of its foundation. It was built in 1962. In 2004, the whole stadium was extensively renovated, and the pitch was replaced with a turf system of the very last generation. The dressing rooms were renovated in 2007. The new facilities and stands that were built in 2015 were fully sponsored by the government of Greece. The stadium is also the home ground for A.O.Nea Ionia F.C and P.A.O. Alsoupolis. The main entrance of the stadium is situated at Olympias Street.[9]

Part of the dramatic film "The Striker with Number 9", directed by Pantelis Voulgaris, was filmed in this stadium.[10]
