Savita Ram Nath Kovind is the First Lady of India since 25 July 2017. She is the wife of the 14th and current President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. Previously, Suvra Mukherjee, wife of the former President Pranab Mukherjee had been the occupant of this title, until her death on 18 August 2015.

Early life

Kovind's parents originally lived near Lahore in present-day Pakistan and moved to India post partition and settled in Lajpat Nagar in Delhi. She is a former employee in Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). She started her career in MTNL as a telephone operator. Gradually she got promoted to the post of Chief Section Supervisor. But in 2005, she took a voluntary retirement.[1]

Personal life

Savitha married Ram Nath Kovind on 30 May 1974. They have a son, and a daughter.[1]

Social work

As First Lady of Bihar, she actively involved in social work and welfare activities for the poor and needy. As the spouse of the Governor of Bihar, she headed a women organization- Mahila Imdad Committee. Under her guidance, the organization undertook several empowerment and upliftment activities focused on the most vulnerable.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in India, First Lady Savita Kovind stitched Face Masks to be distributed at numerous Shelter Homes in New Delhi.[2]

Kovind became the first lady on 25 July 2017 after nearly 2 years of vacancy since the last first lady died in office. India's first spouses act as the official hostesses of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.[3]
