Municipalities of Vietnam
On the First Tier, Vietnam is divided into 58 provinces (Vietnamese: tỉnh) and 5 municipalities (Vietnamese: thành phố trực thuộc trung ương). Municipalities are the highest-ranked cities in Vietnam.[1] Municipalities are centrally-controlled cities and have special status equal to the Province.
The municipalities are divided into Urban Districts (quận), Towns (thị xã) and Rural Districts (huyện) as the Second Tier units. At the Third Tier, Urban Districts are divided into Wards (phường), Towns are divided into Wards (phường) and Communes (xã), while Rural Districts are divided into Townships (thị trấn) and Communes (xã).

Proposed Municipalities
- Thừa Thiên–Huế Province is proposed as a new municipality to be established by before 2021[2]
- Đắk Lắk Province will be divided into the new Đắk Lắk province and Buôn Ma Thuột municipality (Central Highlands region).[3]
- Đà Lạt is proposed as a new municipality to established in around 2030 and located in Lâm Đồng Province.
- 4 provinces will become municipalities:
- Bình Dương Province (2021)[4][5]
- Bắc Ninh Province (2022)[6]
- Khánh Hòa Province (2024)[7]
- Quảng Ninh Province (2025)[8]
