MAO (Japanese: マオ) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. The series started publication in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine in May 2019.
Plot
The story begins with Nanoka Kiba, a middle school girl who has once been in a near-death experience. She gets mixed up in bizarre events after two worlds intersect and meets a mysterious boy, Mao.
Characters
- Mao (摩緒)
- A mysterious man who wields a sword and searches for whoever cursed him using a Cat Demon.
- Nanoka Kiba (黄葉 菜花, Kiba Nanoka)
- A third-year middle school student. She apparently died at the hands of a monster when she was young. Eight years later, she seems very much alive, but on the way back from school one day finds herself in the Taisho era, where she meets the mysterious Mao.
- Otoya (乙弥)
- Mao's assistant, a doll created by Mao for spiteful energy.
- Haimaru (灰丸)
- A demon cat who cursed Mao and Nanoka for his vessel.
- Hyakka (百火)
- Kuchinawa (朽縄)
- Sana (紗那)
- Uozumi (魚住)
- A Shikigami sent by Mao to look after Nanoka.
Publication
MAO is written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. It was announced in the 2019 issue #1 of Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday published in December 2018.[2][3] The manga started in the 2019 issue #23 of Weekly Shōnen Sunday, released on May 8, 2019.[4][1]
The series has been licensed in France by Glénat in January 2020.[5]

Reception
In December 2019, Brutus magazine listed MAO on their "Most Dangerous Manga" list, which included works with the most "stimulating" and thought-provoking themes.[11]
