Jackie Cox is the stage name of Darius Rose, a Canadian drag queen based in New York City, known for being a competitor on the twelfth season of RuPaul's Drag Race and ultimately placing 4th, with another contestant getting disqualified.
Early life
Rose was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to a Canadian father and an Iranian mother.[1] He attended UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television to study theatre and upon graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree, he moved to New York with the goal of doing theatre professionally.[2]
Career
In 2002, Rose transferred to University High School in Irvine where he starred in productions of Dark of the Moon, Les Miserables and Bat Boy the musical. In 2003 he was crowned Prom King as an openly gay student. In 2009, Rose discovered drag. He played the title role in a production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Theatre Out at the Empire Theater, in Santa Ana, CA[3] which was his first foray into drag.[2] His first performance as Jackie Cox was at a competition called So You Think You Can Drag at New World Stages in New York.[2]
RuPaul's Drag Race
Rose was announced as a cast member on season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race on January 23, 2020.[4][5] He is the second Canadian contestant on the US version of the show, and the oldest performer on Season 12. So far in the competition, Rose has been in the top 3 six times, but has not won a challenge. He has been in the bottom two three times. .[citation needed]
Rose became the first contestant in Drag Race history to dress in a Muslim-inspired outfit on episode 9 of the show, which had a 'stars and stripes' patriotic theme. He wore a red-striped kaftan with a blue hijab outlined with 50 silver stars.[6] Guest Judge Jeff Goldblum subsequently came under fire for his comments over Rose’s hijab outfit, when asking, "Is there something in this religion that is anti-homosexuality and anti-woman? Does that complicate the issue?" for which he has been widely criticized.[7][6][8] On the same episode, even though Rose was praised for his choices, he found himself in the bottom two for the first time in the season and had to lip sync against competitor Widow Von’Du to Katy Perry’s "Firework". Rose was successful and Von’Du was eliminated.[9][8]
Jackie later made it to the top 5 of the season (although she technically made it to the top 4 due to Sherry Pie being disqualified for sexual misconduct.) She was later sent home in the penultimate episode by Crystal Methyd, after her third appearance in the bottom two. Her elimination was also very controversial, as many fans believed she should have been in the final and that Sherry Pie (who was disqualified before production began) should have gone instead of her. This resulted in a top 3 advancing to the final instead of a top 4, it also sparked some fans to suggest that Jackie should be brought back to take Sherry's place in the final to join the top 3 Crystal Methyd, Gigi Goode and eventual winner Jaida Essence Hall as she had technically made it to the top 4 and thus was a finalist.
Jackie is also the fourth contestant to not win any challenges, make it to the top 4/5 and be eliminated in the penultimate episode before the finale, after Shannel from Season 1, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo from Season 11 and Cheryl Hole from UK Season 1.
