History[edit]

A.F. Blakemore was started in 1917 as a counter service grocery store by Arthur Blakemore and his wife. After early success, they branched into supplying other groceries, at first with bags and other provisions, later with products for resale.

Arthur Blakemore was followed by his son, Frank, who in turn was followed by his son, Peter Blakemore. The company is still privately owned by the family today.

A.F. Blakemore was one of the first companies involved in symbol group trading in the 1950s and opened some of the very first cash & carry depots in the UK in the 1960s.

In spring 2011 A.F. Blakemore purchased Capper & Co., another regional distributor for SPAR.[1] As a result A.F. Blakemore acquired an additional 116 company-owned SPAR stores as well as the supply of a further 316 independently owned sites.

Recent years have also seen the expansion of the Blakemore Wholesale estate. In July 2013 A.F. Blakemore announced the purchase of three Lowries Wholesale depots in Killingworth, Hexham and Penrith, providing the business with access to a large number of additional catering and retail customers across North East England.

Then, in March 2014 the company announced the purchase of leading South Wales-based wholesaler BA Cash & Carry, consisting of two large depots located in Cardiff and Swansea. The move established Blakemore Wholesale as the third largest company of its kind in the UK market.
