History and traditions
The term Ahluwalia came into use after the rise of a resident of the Ahlu village (located 11 miles S.E. of Lahore), Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, who was born into a kalal familiy.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] A misldar (commander of the Misl) of the Sikh Empire of Punjab he was the first Ahluwalia or Walia. Hence his descendants and followers came to be known by Ahluwalia or Walia in urban areas. Later, descendants of other non-Sikh residents of the village also started using Ahluwalia, now a sizable community among Punjabis. They belong to kalal community[8][9][10][11][12][13][14].
