The second season of Airtel Super Singer Junior - Thamizhagathin Chellakuralukkana Thedal (the search for the sweet voice of Tamil Nadu) premiered on 21 June 2009. The music competition reality TV show was again telecast on Vijay TV,[1] and Bharti Airtel returned to sponsor the show. Episodes were telecast between Monday to Thursday each week at 9:00pm.[2][3] Children from the age of 6 years to the age of 14 years were permitted to audition to showcase their talent on Vijay TV's platform.[2] Apart from gaining recognition from acclaimed names of the music industry and being a child singing icon, the show initially promised that its winner would be honored with Rs.25 lakhs in cash prize money.[2] Later, the hosts in each episode of the top 25 performance rounds announced that the winner would win a Villa in Anugraha Satellite Town worth Rs.25 lakhs from its sponsor, Navashakthi Township and Developers.

Following playback singer Chinmayi's decision to quit hosting Vijay TV's Super Singer series earlier in the year,[4][5] various television anchors including Divyadarshini, Sivakarthikeyan, Aishwarya Prabhakar, and Uma Padmanabhan, filled in to host the show at various intervals, and playback singer Divya appeared fairly regularly during the season as a replacement. Ananth Vaidyanathan returned as a voice trainer, and playback singer K. S. Chithra returned as a permanent judge of the show. Playback singers Mano, and Malgudi Subha also joined the show as permanent judges to replace Usha Uthup who quit the show.

A number of eminent playback singers and music directors appeared during the season as guest judges, including P. B. Sreenivas, P. Susheela, M. S. Viswanathan, S. Janaki, Sadhana Sargam, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Suchithra, Harish Raghavendra, Unni Menon, Madhu Balakrishnan, Sowmya, Pop Shalini, Pushpavanam Kuppuswamy. Stars from the senior version of the show also appeared as judges during the season, including former contestants Naresh Iyer, Nikhil Mathew, and Ajeesh, and permanent judges P. Unnikrishnan, Anuradha Sriram and Srinivas - the latter of whom introduced the winner, Alka Ajith, as a playback singer in the 2011 Malayalam language film, The Train.

Finalists

Alka Ajith (contestant ID SSJ02), known in the competition as Alka, is from Kerala. She had a repertoire of 200 songs at the start of the competition. Alka was placed into the grand finale by the permanent judges.

Alka was crowned the winner of the competition at the grand finale.

Shravan R. Pratap (contestant ID SS), known in the competition as Shravan, was born to a family hailing from Kerala. He was learning Carnatic music from Padma Chandilyan (wife of mridangist Srimushnam V. Raja Rao) and had performed Carnatic music concerts before entering the competition. Shravan was placed into the grand finale by the permanent judges.

Shravan was crowned runner-up of the competition at the grand finale, and won a car. He subsequently competed in various spin-off versions of the show as well as other music competitions broadcast by Vijay TV, including Airtel Super Singer T20, and most recently on Super Singer T20 season 2.

Nithyashree Venkataraman (contestant ID SS), known in the competition as Nithyashree, entered the competition when she was 9 years old.[6] She was initially eliminated from the top 4 as a semi-finalist, but immediately qualified as a wild-card contestant. She re-entered the competition as a grand finalist after receiving viewer votes and following a decision of the permanent judges. Nithyashree ended up in joint fourth-place with fellow-contestant Roshan, which won her a cash prize of 2 lakh rupees. Shortly after the finale, she was selected to host a couple of post-final episodes of the show before the season came to a close. She later appeared as a guest performer and backing vocalist in subsequent seasons of the show, and competed in other music competitions broadcast by Vijay TV, including as a top 5 contender in Junior Super Stars and as a winner in Kedi Boys Killadi Girls.

Nithyashree successfully competed in Super Singer T20, a spin-off version of the show which formed part of Vijay TV's Super Singer television series. For the debut season in 2013, Nithyashree was a member of the winning team captained by Saisharan. For the second season in 2015, she was a member of Saisharan's new team, which went on to win the title for a consecutive season.

Nithyashree also successfully competed in Indian Idol Junior (season 2), a reality TV singing competition on the Hindi language Indian TV channel, Sony TV and finished as runner-up.

Roshan (contestant ID SS) was born to a family hailing from Kerala. He was placed into the grand finale by the permanent judges, and ended up in joint fourth-place with fellow-contestant Nithyashree, which won him a cash prize of 2 lakh rupees. He subsequently competed in spin-off versions of the show as well as other music competitions broadcast by Vijay TV.

Since his appearance on the show, his younger brother Robin has appeared as a contestant in Sun Singer broadcast by Sun TV, and in 2014, as a contestant in season 4 of Airtel Super Singer Junior.

Srikanth (contestant ID SS) was the youngest finalist of the season. He was initially eliminated from the top 8 finalists, but returned to qualify as a wildcard contestant. The permanent judges controversially made an exception to allow him to re-enter the competition as a finalist as he appeared to be popular at the time.

Srikanth ended up being given the title "Most Popular Contestant" of the season, and was awarded a cash prize of 3 lakh rupees after ending up in third place. He subsequently appeared as a competitor on the debut season of Airtel Super Singer T20, a spin-off version of the show which formed part of Vijay TV's Super Singer television series.

Srinisha (contestant ID SS) was eliminated from the competition from the top 5 as a semi-finalist. Although she immediately qualified as a wild-card contestant, a controversy arose after viewers protested against the judge's decision to eliminate her again before the finale. Nevertheless, viewers were pleased when Srinisha was recognised at the finale and awarded a cash prize of 1 lakh rupees. She later appeared as a guest performer and backing vocalist in subsequent seasons of the show, and competed in other music competitions broadcast by Vijay TV, including Kedi Boys Killadi Girls.

Srinisha also competed in Super Singer T20, a spin-off version of the show which formed part of Vijay TV's Super Singer television series. For the debut season in 2013, Srinisha was a member of a team which was captained by Santhosh which was eliminated early on the competition. However, for the second season in 2015, she was selected to be a member of Saisharan's new team, which went on to win the Super Singer T20 title. Her performance of the song "Konjam Nilavu" in the grand finals of the second season was considered by guest judge S. P. Charan to be "better than the original".

Priyanka (contestant ID SS) was initially eliminated from the competition as a quarter-finalist from the top 6. Although she subsequently qualified as a wild-card contestant, a controversy arose after viewers protested against the judge's decision to eliminate her again before the finale. Nevertheless, viewers were pleased when Priyanka was recognised at the finale and awarded a cash prize of 1 lakh rupees. She later appeared as a guest performer and backing vocalist in subsequent seasons of the show, and competed in other music competitions broadcast by Vijay TV, including Kedi Boys Killadi Girls, and spin-off versions of the show such as Super Singer T20.

Shrihari appeared as a contestant during season 1 of the show. He was initially eliminated from the top 11 finalists. Although he qualified as a wild-card contestant, he was eliminated again before the finale.

Prasanna Sundar was eliminated from the top 7 finalists.

Sharath Rajagopalan, known as Sharath during the competition, was eliminated from the top 9 finalists. He recently auditioned for Super Singer Season 5, the senior version of the show.

Sahana was receiving training in Carnatic music prior to entering the competition. She was unfortunately eliminated from the top 10 finalists.

Balasarangan was eliminated from the top 12 finalists.

Ovviya, like fellow contestants Srinidhi and Sathyanarayanan, previously appeared on Jaya TV's Ragamalika series. Ovviya was eliminated from the top 13 finalists.

Sowmya was eliminated from the top 15 finalists. She later auditioned for season 5 of Airtel Super Singer, and was selected as a top 11 finalist. She gave many outstanding performances, including during the classical round where she sang Kelviyin Nayagane. However, the permanent judges from the junior version of the show returned to prematurely eliminate her in the following round which disappointed fans of the show.

Sivaranjani was eliminated from the top 19 contestants. She recently participated in the auditions for Super Singer Season 5, the senior version of the show.

Sanjana was learning Carnatic music from Padma Chandilyan (wife of mridangist Srimushnam V. Raja Rao) prior to entering the competition. She was eliminated from the top 20 finalists.

Boys vs Girls Round (16 November 2009 – 19 November 2009)

This week's episode split the top 20 contestants into two teams to compete against each other - male contestants against female contestants. Voice trainer Ananth Vaidyanathan, who in the previous season only trained the contestants during the later rounds of the show, was training the contestants from this week. He made his first appearance on the show for the season in this week's episode, and at the conclusion of the performances, he requested the judges to not eliminate any contestants this week. The judges agreed with the request and thereby the round was a celebration round for the top 20 contestants.

"Mottukalin Mettukal" Round (23 November 2009 – 25 November 2009)

The top 20 contestants participated in a Mottukalin Mettukal round this week. At the end of this week's performance, contestant SSJ14 Sanjana was eliminated from the competition.

Carnatic Classical Round - Karthigai Deepam Special (30 November 2009 – 2 December 2009)

  – Non-competition performance
  – Contestant spot-selected to advance to next round
  – Contestant is in bottom five

This round was in celebration of the Hindu festival Karthigai Deepam, and required contestants to sing film songs which fitted in the Carnatic music ("classical") genre.

Carnatic music exponent and playback singer Nithyasree Mahadevan made her first appearance on the show and was a special guest judge for this round. The special guest judges were able to spot-select up to five contestants who would be granted immediate immunity from this week's elimination and could advance to the next round. Students receiving formal training in Bharatha Natyam danced while each contestant performed.

At the conclusion of this week's performances, the special guest judges decided to waitlist the bottom five contestants and would not eliminate any contestant based on this week's performances. Consequently, the bottom five contestants would be required to perform in a "waitlist challenge" next week, and a decision would then be made as to which contestant from the bottom five would be eliminated.

Patriotic & Bharathiyar Songs Round (25 January 2010 – 28 January 2010)

The first episode of the week telecast the waitlist challenge between the bottom four contestants from the previous week's performances. Of these four contestants, contestants SSJ07 Sowmya and SSJ08 Ovviya were considered the weakest performers. However, the judges announced that no elimination would take place and both contestants were given a final chance, and warned that if either contestant was a bottom performer in this competition in future, they will be eliminated.

The remaining episodes of the week required the top 15 contestants to perform songs penned by poet Subramania Bharathiyar, or songs of an Indian patriotic genre. Personal secretary to the late Mahatma Gandhi, Mr V.S. Kalyanam, appeared as a special guest on the show. At the conclusion of this week's performances, the judges announced that in celebration of this week's theme and to mirror the effect of Independence Day (India), no contestants would be eliminated following this week's performances.

Moon Songs Round (22 March 2010 – 25 March 2010)

The "Nila Padalgal" (Moon Songs) round required the top 9 contestants to perform songs over two parts which fitted the theme of the week - the moon. The setting and lighting in the studio where the show is recorded was transformed completely. The compere, voice trainer, permanent judges, and contestants were all dressed in white to celebrate the theme.

The first part of the round required contestants to sing hits from films released before 1980. The special guest of the week was veteran playback singer, P. B. Sreenivas, who himself sang a large number of songs based on this theme during his younger years. After the performance of contestant SSJ18 Sharath, P. B. Sreenivas sang the first line of the song when giving his feedback on the performance.

The second part of the round required contestants to sing hits from films released after 1980. Contestant SSJ02 Alka Ajith was announced as best performer of this part of the round, while contestants SSJ11 Nithyashree and SSJ21 Priyanka were considered runner up best performers.

"Award Winning Songs" Round (5 April 2010 – 8 April 2010)

Immunity Selection (first part telecast 5 April 2010 and 6 April 2010)

This round required the top 7 contestants to perform National Award Winning Songs. The best performer and runner up from the first part of the round were given an award by special guest judge and veteran playback singer P. Susheela, and were given immunity to advance to the next round. P. Susheela determined that contestant SSJ16 Srinisha was best performer of the round, while contestant SSJ15 Shravan was runner up.

Danger Zone Selection (second part telecast 7 April 2010)

The second part of the round required the five remaining contestants to perform National Award Winning Songs to avoid being placed in the danger zone. Veteran playback singer S. Janaki appeared as a special guest judge for this round. S. Janaki noted that there is already a great singer named Nithyasree Mahadevan, and the junior-named contestant SSJ19 Nithyashree was also great in her performance. But at the conclusion of the performances by the five remaining contestants in the second part, the three weakest performing contestants were placed in the danger zone.

Elimination & Safe Zone Selection (final part telecast 8 April 2010)

Contestants placed in the danger zone were required to perform in an elimination round in the 8 April 2010 episode. The three contestants in the danger zone were required to perform State Award Winning Songs during the elimination round, and the weakest performing contestant would be eliminated from the round. During this round, guest judge S. Janaki was impressed with the performance by contestant SSJ19 Nithyashree and walked to the stage to hug the contestant after her performance.

After the three contestants performed, the permanent judges placed contestant SSJ02 Alka Ajith in the safe zone. The compere announced that the permanent judges would teach the first part of a song to each of the remaining two contestants, and they would need to perform that song instantly. The best performing contestant would be also placed in the safe zone.

Mano & Chithra announced that contestant SSJ11 Nithyashree took 6 minutes and 24 seconds to learn and made two mistakes during the performance, while SSJ19 Roshan took 5 minutes and 4 seconds, and made one mistake during their performance. Following the performances by the two contestants, the permanent judges said they would eliminate contestant SSJ19 Nithyashree. However, special guest S. Janaki said she did not like any contestants being eliminated for rounds where she appears as a special guest, and asked for no eliminations to take place. Consequently, the permanent judges confirmed that they would not act against the wishes of S. Janaki, and no elimination would take place.

Wild Card Results (season 2)

Wildcard Winners as announced by the judges were Srikanth and Nithyashree and will enter the finals along with Alka Ajith, Roshan and Shravan. The wild card results created a lot of frustrations and disappointments among Vijay TV viewers citing that the public votes were manipulated and played no role in the results. Expectations were extremely high and various blogs were very much in favour of the wild card winner as Priyanka followed by Srinisha.[8][9] Views have been aired that Srikanth and Nithyashree though talented pose no competency to the other finalists in the final round.
