Antoon Verschoot

Antoon Verschoot, MBE, Order of the Crown (Belgium) (Ypres, 19 June 1925 - 1 February 2017) is a firefighter Corporal and a bugler.

Background[edit]

On 12 December 2015, Antoon Verschoot played his last Last Post at the Menin Gate,[1] after 65 years Ypres with the Ypres/Ieper fire brigade, which he joined in 1950. He became a bugler for the Last Post Association[2] in 1954 making him the oldest and longest serving bugler with the Association. After a few presses on the calculator, we have estimated that he must have played at The Gate over 15,000 times![3][4]
