Armored Warfare is a free-to-play multiplayer online shooter video game currently in open beta developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by My.com. The game features combat vehicles from the 1950s through modern day and includes destructible environments as well as player vs. environment and player vs. player gameplay.[1] Armored Warfare is built on the free-to-play business model with in-game micro-transactions available for certain features and upgrades.[2] It will also have the option of signing up for premium account time, which allows bonuses to progression. Armored Warfare launched into open beta on 8 October 2015 for PC.[3]
Plot
The story takes place in the 2030s, in a world where economic and political chaos has given rise to private military companies, where conflict is business.[4]
Gameplay
Armored Warfare is set in a modern virtual world where the player takes on the role of a mercenary employed by a private military company. The game offers players the opportunity to participate in battles across co-op player vs. environment campaigns and team-based player vs. player matches in a variety of armored vehicles, main battle tanks, and long-range artillery.[5] Players can customize their vehicles with upgrades and retrofits that affect the way the vehicles perform in-game.
Vehicle classes
Players can obtain vehicles in five vehicle classes: Main battle tanks (MBTs), AFVs (armored fighting vehicles), light tanks, tank destroyers, and artillery from Non-player character weapon dealers. MBTs such as the M1A1, Challenger 1 and the T-90 are the traditional heavy armor, built for maximum firepower and absorbing damage. AFVs such as the M2 Bradley, BMP-3 and the Warrior are highly mobile and well-suited for spotting enemies and remaining concealed. Self-Propelled Guns or artillery such as the M109, Palmaria and the PzH 2000 utilizes indirect fire to deal damage to enemy vehicles at long range. Tank Destroyers such as the M1128 MGS, and the B1 Centauro mount the same high-damage guns as the main battle tanks, but on a much lighter and more mobile platform with better camouflage. Light tanks such as the Stingray and XM8 are lightly armored and more mobile versions of the main battle tanks, effective at flanking and making rapid maneuvers, but far less capable of absorbing or deflecting damage.[6]
Customization
Armored Warfare offers players a wide array of vehicle and base customization options.[7] It is possible to unlock additional vehicles and equipment as players progress through the game as well as visually customize their vehicles with camoflauge patterns and paints, as well as emblems on the side of vehicles.[8]
Player vs. Environment
PvE missions are designed for a group of five players to fight against artificial intelligence (AI) controlled bots. Players can queue for missions individually or grouped with up to four other players in a platoon. Missions can be selected from several difficulty levels up to insane, where success depends on the vehicles the players bring, coordination between the team members and skill in the PvE arena. [9]
Global Operations
With patch 0.18 Global Operations were introduced into the game. It is a PvP & PvE hybrid game mode that is unique in the genre, blending longer term strategy with moment to moment tactics. In Global Operations, players participate in large scale, dynamic battles.[10]
This mode introduces improvements to the core Armored Warfare rules, including:
- Respawning to allow players to be engaged in the battle for much longer
- Primary objectives that change throughout the match
- Secondary objectives called “wild cards”[11] that change the shape and direction of the battle in exciting ways
Players can also capture special “Wildcard” objectives that give them the ability to call in military asset from their HQ, to tip the balance of the battle in their favor. With 0.18 the first map Desert Crossing contains the following “wildcards”:
- Pillboxes: static AI-controlled object firing Anti-Tank guided missiles at enemy forces
- Surveillance drone: a unmanned aerial asset that can fly above a zone and spot the enemy teams movements with ease.
- Air Raid: a powerful B2 bombing run attack that flies in from off the map to wreak havoc among-st enemy lines!
- Supply Zone: to allow resupply of ammo without needing to respawn
