Azrael (Biblical Hebrew: עזראל‎‎) is often identified with the Angel of Death of the Hebrew Bible.[1][2] The Hebrew name translates to "Help of God," "Help from God," or "One whom God Helps."[1] Azrael is the spelling of the Chambers English dictionary. The Qur'an refers to a Malak al-Maut ("Angel of Death") but it does not refer to him by the Judeo-Christian term. Islamic-Persian tradition adopts the name, in the Persian alphabet as عزرائیل, furthermore adopted into Sikhism as Punjabi: ਅਜਰਾਈਲ.


Depending on the outlook and precepts of various religions in which he is a figure, Azrael may be portrayed as residing in the Third Heaven.[3] In one of his forms, he has four faces and four thousand wings, and his whole body consists of eyes and tongues; the number thereof corresponds to the number of people inhabiting the Earth. He will be the last to die, recording and erasing, constantly in a large book the names of men at birth and death, respectively.[4]

In Judaism[edit]

In Jewish mysticism, he is commonly referred to as "Azriel" (Biblical Hebrew: עזריאל‎‎), not "Azrael." The Zohar, a holy book of the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, presents a positive depiction of Azriel. The Zohar says that Azriel receives the prayers of faithful people when they reach heaven, and also commands legions of heavenly angels. Accordingly, Azriel is associated with the South and is considered to be a high-ranking commander of God's angels.[5]

In Christianity[edit]

There is no reference to Azrael in the Bible, and he is not considered a canonical nor a non-canonical figure within Christianity. However, a story in 2 Esdras (a book disallowed by the Catholic and Protestant Churches, but considered canonical in Eastern Orthodox teachings) which is part of the Apocrypha, has the story of a scribe and judge named Ezra (not to be confused with the Biblical figure), also sometimes written "Azra" in different languages. Azra was visited by the Archangel Uriel and given a list of laws and punishments he was to adhere to and enforce as judge over his people. Azra was later recorded in the Apocrypha as having entered Heaven "without tasting death's taint". Depending on various religious views, it could be taken as Ezra ascending to angelic status. This would add the suffix "el" to his name, which denotes a heavenly being (e.g. Michael, Raphael, Uriel). Hence, it would be Ezrael/Azrael. Later books also state a scribe named Salathiel, who was quoted as saying, "I, Salathiel, who is also Ezra". Again, depending on certain views of Christian spirituality, this could be seen as angelic influence from Ezrael/Azrael on Salathiel, though this view of spirituality is neither confirmed nor denied by any popular denomination of Christians.

In Islam[edit]

In some cultures and sects, Azrael (also pronounced as ʿIzrāʾīl /Azriel) is the name referring to the Angel of Death by some Arabic speakers. The name is mentioned in a few Muslim books although some Muslims argue that it has no basis of reference.[citation needed] Along with Jibrīl, Mīkhā'īl, Isrāfīl and other angels, the Angel of Death is believed by Muslims to be one of the archangels.[6] The Qur'an states that the angel of death takes the soul of every person and returns it to God.[7] However, the Qur'an makes it clear that only God knows when and where each person will be taken by death.[8] Several Muslim traditions recount meetings between the Angel of Death and the prophets, the most famous being a conversation between the Angel of Death and Moses.[6] He watches over the dying, separates the soul from the body, and receives the spirits of the dead in Muslim belief. Rather than merely representing death personified, the Angel of Death is usually described in Islamic sources as subordinate to the will of God "with the most profound reverence."[9] However, there is no reference within the Qur'an or any Islamic teachings giving the angel of death the name of Azrael.

Some have also disputed the usage of the name Azrael as it is not used in the Qur'an itself.[citation needed] However, the same can be said about many Prophets and angels who are also not mentioned by name in the Qur'an. But since there is no source in official Islamic scripture nor Hadith Sahih, the angel of death is called Malak Al-Maut. (There is a concept of levels and titles to angels but the best analogy to the term Archangel would be Al-Malak'u al-a'ala which means higher chief in reference to angels.)

In Sikhism[edit]

In Sikh scriptures written by Guru Nanak, God (Waheguru) sends Azrael to people who are unfaithful and unrepentant for their sins. Azrael appears on Earth in human form, hits sinful people on the head with his scythe to kill them, and then extracts their souls from their bodies. He then brings their souls to Sheol, and makes sure that they get the punishment that Waheguru decrees once he judges them. This would portray him as more of an avenging angel, or angel of retribution, rather than just an angel of death. It is unknown which story of Azrael this view is taken from.

At the time of the Sikh Gurus many Indian faiths were at loggerheads against the belief of each other. It mainly involved two major faiths of that time in the subcontinent, namely Hinduism and Islam. Sikhism played a major role in unifying all faiths by restoring the faith in one almighty god and helping in mending differences. Hence one finds the mention of an angel of death in both Hinduism and Islam, where many times the angel of death has been addressed as Jamdoot or simply as Jamm and while giving an example from Islam's perspective he has been addressed as Azrael. This also goes on to show that the Sikh Gurus or the Guru Granth Sahib supported the truth of judgment of each individual soul after his/her death in the court of God.[10] A famous and highly regarded Sikh Saint, Bhai Randhir Singh, has given a profound and vivid description of afterlife in his notable work Unditthi Duniya meaning 'A Mystical Invisible World' using his own spiritual experiences and quoting references from Guru Granth Sahib.[11]

In the holy scripture of the sikhs at page 721[12] there is a Shabad authored by Guru Nanak Dev ji presumably for the Persian (Farsi) speaking audience in Iran quoted by Punjabi script:

ਯਕ ਅਰਜ ਗੁਫਤਮ ਪੇਸਿ ਤੋ ਦਰ ਗੋਸ ਕੁਨ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥ 721 I offer this one prayer to You; please listen to it, O Creator Lord. ਹਕਾ ਕਬੀਰ ਕਰੀਮ ਤੂ ਬੇਐਬ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰ ॥੧॥ You are true, great, merciful and spotless, O Cherisher Lord. ||1|| ਦੁਨੀਆ ਮੁਕਾਮੇ ਫਾਨੀ ਤਹਕੀਕ ਦਿਲ ਦਾਨੀ ॥ The world is a transitory place of mortality - know this for certain in your mind. ਮਮ ਸਰ ਮੂਇ ਅਜਰਾਈਲ ਗਿਰਫਤਹ ਦਿਲ ਹੇਚਿ ਨ ਦਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, has caught me by the hair on my head, and yet, I do not know it at all in my mind. ||1||Pause||

In Folklore[edit]

A story from Folk-lore of the Holy Land: Muslim, Christian and Jewish by J. E. Hanauer tells of a soldier with a gambling addiction avoiding Azrael. Because the soldier goes to Jesus and asks for help, then must later see Jesus and repent to be allowed back in Heaven; this story can be seen as a Christian account of Azrael. However, this story does not specify whether Azrael is an angel of death, or an angel of punishment.

In popular culture[edit]

In the novel trilogy The Strain, the primary antagonist known as The Master was one of seven ancient vampires born of the remains of Ozyrael, the fallen Archangel.

In Kevin Smith's 1999 film Dogma, Azrael (portrayed by Jason Lee) is the character pulling the strings behind the bulk of the plot, manipulating both protagonists and antagonists to quietly carry out the cast-down angels' revenge on God for the judgment she cast on Azrael.

Azrael appears as one of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the novel Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

In the The Leftovers on HBO, Azrael is mentioned as a demon that some pseudo-scientists believe is inhabiting the character Nora Durst, which causes the disappearance of people.

An episode of CSI: New York which dealt with an older Mrs. Robinson type of woman suspected of murder was titled "Here's To You, Mrs. Azrael."

Azrael appears in Melissa de la Cruz's book series Blue Bloods, only rather than being male as in real-life mythology, Azrael actually appears as a young woman named Madeleine "Mimi" Force. She is one of the Blue Bloods of the New York Coven, a community of fallen angels who fought on Lucifer's side in the War in Heaven and were subsequently punished by God by being cursed to live their immortal lives on Earth as vampires. In her angelic form, she is the Angel of Death, and, with her twin brother Benjamin "Jack" Force, also known as Abbadon, the Angel of Destruction, the two make up the Twin Angels of the Apocalypse, two of the oldest and most powerful of God's angels who are only inferior to the archangels.

Azrael is the name of the cat belonging to Gargamel in the television cartoon The Smurfs.

In the 2015 video game Undertale, the similarly-named character Asriel Dreemurr transforms into an angel of death in one of the endings, in apparent reference to Azrael.

Azrael is the name of three fictional characters in the DC Comics universe. Azrael is a member of a group of assassins who were created by The Sacred Order of Saint Dumas to "enforce God's Will" he also appears in Batman: Arkham Knight

Azrael is also the Supreme Grand Master of the Dark Angels Chapter in Warhammer 40,000.
