The battle of Pisky are a series of military engagements near the city of Pisky between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the battle for Donbas in 2022.

Background

During the Eastern Ukraine offensive in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian and pro-separatist forces set their sights on seizing the Donbas region, consisting of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. Parts of these oblasts, including their capitals with the same names, were seized in pro-Russian uprisings in 2014. Before Russia officially launched its invasion of Ukraine, Avdiyivka was the first place where the conflict escalated, just 3km north of Pisky. On March 13, Russian forces bombed the Avdiyevka coking plant.[2] On 14 March 2022, during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, a Tochka-U missile attack hit the center of Donetsk, Ukraine, at the time under de facto administration of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). The Russian Investigative Committee reported that the attack killed 23 civilians, including children, and injured at least 18 people.[3] The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that the attacked killed 15 civilians and injured 36 people.[4] Ukraine claimed that the rocket had been fired by the Russians, while Russia and the DPR claimed that the attack was carried out by Ukrainian forces. On March 17, Russian and separatist forces launched an offensive on Marinka, located a few kilometers south of Piski. Marinka is a strong defense fortification of the Ukrainian forces on the dividing line between Ukraine and the Russian separatist states DPR and LNR.[5] On the night of April 18, 2022, Russian forces launched an intensive bombing campaign against positions in Lugansk, Donetsk, and Kharkiv Oblasts, beginning the Battle of Donbass.[6] On June 13, Ukrainian forces launched an artillery attack that reportedly hit a market in Donetsk, the capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, killing five people.[7] The DPR accused Ukraine of carrying out shelling attacks from the areas of Pisky and Krasnogorovka.[8][9] On the night of July 28-29, a prison was destroyed in Molodizhne near the village of Olenivka, a settlement southwest of Donetsk controlled by the Russian-backed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR). Russian and DNR casualty figures indicate that 53 Ukrainian prisoners were killed and another 75 wounded[10] (the Russian statement initially suggested 40 dead and 75 wounded, in addition to 8 guards).[11] The Ukrainian side suggested that around 40 people were killed and 130 wounded.[12]

Both sides agree that Azov fighters were captured in the destroyed barracks, brought a few days before the event. Denis Pushilin, the leader of the DNR, suggested that there were no foreigners among the 193 prisoners held in the detention facility, but did not specify the number of Ukrainians detained.[10] Russian officials have published a list of deceased prisoners. As of July 30, 2022, Ukrainian officials stated that they were unable to verify the list.[13] After the rocket attacks on Olenivka, the Russian side accused the Ukrainian side of having launched an attack with American HIMARS missile systems from the area of Pisky, Marinka and Vuhledar, and on the same day it was decided to launch a general offensive in the direction of those three places.[14]

Battle

On 28 July, DPR and Russian forces launched a claimed offensive to surround Avdiivka. Russian and separatist forces assaulted the towns of Krasnohorivka, Pisky, and other towns north of Avdiivka, with unspecified gains.[15] On 31 July, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces attempted advances around Kamyanka and Pisky and that unspecified separate Russian units had ”partial success” around Avdiivka. Donetsk People‘s Republic (DPR) Deputy Information Minister Daniil Bezsonov claimed that Russian and DPR forces secured positions on the southeastern outskirts of Pisky, which is consistent with Ukrainian reports.[16] The Head of the Avdiivka City Military Administration Vitalii Barabash said that only 10% of the pre-war population of Avdiivka remained or about 2,500 people.[17]

Ukraine said on 5 August that it lost the Butivka coal mine to Russia and claimed it was pushed to the outskirts of Avdiivka.[18][19] The DPR claimed its forces and Russia took Pisky, with Ukraine rejecting the claim.[20][21] On August 7, combat footage showed that Russian forces had reached the centre of Pisky.[22]As of August 12, the ISW reported that based on combat footage and satelite imagery, much of Pisky had been leveled by the Russians, because of heavy shelling using thermobaric artillery systems.[23] The Russian defence ministry claimed to have fully captured Pisky on 13 August,[24][25] but the Ukrainian military denied that it had been captured, saying fighting was ongoing.[26][better source needed]
