Bhawani Dayal Arya College (formerly known as Bhawani Dayal High School) is a school established in Fiji in 1972.

History

Bhawani Dayal Arya College is a school governed by the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, situated at Nakasi, Fiji. Nausori. The school roll is 910, an increase from 905 in 2012, with 45 teachers, five auxiliary staff and one culture teacher.

The college was established in 1972, known as Bhawani Dayal High School. The college is named in memory of a freedom fighter for Indians in South Africa, Swami Bhawani Dayal Sanyasi. Swami Ji was a champion of Indian rights. He was born in Johannes Berg in 1892 and died in 1950.

The school was started in a temporary shed in Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary compound with 28 students and two teachers. The foundation of a new building was laid by Pt. Raghwa Nand MBE (President of Arya Samaj) on 15 August 1972. The school was officially opened be the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mr Filipe Bole on 3 April 1976 with 388 students and 17 teachers.

In 1980 a new canteen and the only quarters attached to the school were constructed.

The growing population in the Nakasi area pushed the samaj to add new classrooms. The foundation for a two storey (southern wing) was laid by Mr Shiu Pal Nandan in 1981 and opened in 1983 by Dr Ahmad Ali, Minister for Education and Youth.

A multicraft workshop was made by the Ministry of Education in 1982. Another classroom was added to the building in 1988. Multicraft was shut down because of a diminishning number of students and the buildings have been renovated to cater for the Industrial Arts Department. In 1984 form 6 was started and in 1989 the school was upgraded to level 1 status.

In 1990 the Industrial Arts Workshop was constructed. Five new classrooms together with a new toilet block was completed in 1993 (L-shaped southern wing).

In 1992 Cadet Training began but was abandoned two years later due to financial difficulties. In 1993 Form 7 education was introduced. The school changed its name at the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 1997.

Due to demand for intake in the school another L-shaped building in the Northern Wing (consisting of five classrooms and a Hawan Room) was constructed. Pressure for admissions at form 7 level saw the completion of the central wing with three classrooms.

The college has five streams each at forms 3 to 6 and four streams at form 7 level.
