South Korean boy band Big Bang began their career in 2006, with their formation being documented on television.[1] They have released eight studio albums, eight extended plays (EPs), eight compilations, ten live albums and thirty-five singles. The group's debut was a moderate success, with their first album netting in sales of over 150,000 copies.[2] It spawned several radio singles, including "La La La" and "We Belong Together". The group's breakthrough hit was "Lies" (Korean: 거짓말; Revised Romanization: Geojinmal) from their first mini-album Always (2007), which topped the Melon Chart for six weeks. Their following mini-albums followed its predecessor's footsteps: Hot Issue (2007) yielded "Last Farewell" (Korean: 마지막 인사; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa) while Stand Up (2008) spawned "Day by Day" (Korean: 하루하루; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru), which topped the chart for eight and seven weeks respectively.[3][4] Their second album Remember (2008) was a commercial success and yielded two singles, "Sunset Glow" and "Strong Baby".[5]

The group ventured into the Japanese market with their first Japanese-language extended play For the World (2008),[6] and their debut self-titled Japanese album being released in August 2009.[7][8] The latter was promoted with two singles: "My Heaven," that debuted at number three on the Oricon Chart,[9] and "Gara Gara Go!!" (ガラガラ GO!!).[10][11] They released the song "Lollipop" with their labelmate 2NE1 in 2009 to promote the LG Cyon's Lollipop phone.[12] The song topped various online charts and became a viral hit.[13] Tonight (2011) was their first release in South Korea after two-year hiatus as a group.[14] With Alive (2012) they became the first Korean artist with a Korean-language album to chart on the Billboard 200.[15] Its lead single, "Blue" topped all major domestic charts.[16] After a three-year hiatus, Big Bang made their comeback in 2015 by releasing "project singles" from their album Made (2016): "M," "A," "D," and "E."[17] All eleven songs from the album charted within the top three positions on the Gaon Digital Chart, with five songs topping with chart.
