Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell[1] (born December 18, 2001[2]), known professionally as Billie Eilish, is an American singer-songwriter. Her debut single, "Ocean Eyes", went viral and has accumulated over 87 million streams on Spotify alone as of July 2018. Her debut EP Don't Smile at Me was released in August 2017. Following the EP's success, Apple named Eilish as its newest Apple Music Up Next artist a month later in October 2017.[3]

Life and career

Early beginnings and "Ocean Eyes"

O'Connell was raised in Highland Park, Los Angeles, to a family of actors and musicians.[4][2][5][6] Her parents are actress-musician-screenwriter Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell.[7][8][9] She was homeschooled, and joined the Los Angeles Children's Chorus at age eight. At age eleven, Billie began writing and singing her own songs, taking after her older brother Finneas O'Connell who was already writing, performing and producing his own songs with his band.[10] In October 2015, Billie recorded the song "Ocean Eyes", initially written by Finneas for his band, and sent it to her dance teacher who hoped to choreograph a dance to it.[10][11]

"Ocean Eyes" was released as Eilish's debut single on SoundCloud in 2016. A music video was released on March 24, 2016, and a video of Eilish performing a dance to the song was released on November 22, 2016. That year, Eilish also released the single "Six Feet Under."[10][12] "Ocean Eyes" was rereleased worldwide through Darkroom and Interscope Records on November 18, 2016, to mainly positive critical reviews. "The song is pure pop; a ballad about longing for reconciliation with an ex. I can imagine it becoming a major hit," said Chris DeVille of Stereogum. On January 14, 2017, Eilish released an EP with four remixes of "Ocean Eyes".[13]

2016–2017: Breakthrough and Don't Smile at Me

Following the success of the "Ocean Eyes" remixes, Eilish released the single "Bellyache" on February 24, 2017.[14] "Bellyache" was produced and co-written by Finneas O'Connell, with a music video directed by Miles and AJ being released on March 22, 2017. On March 30, Eilish released the track "Bored" as part of the soundtrack to the television series 13 Reasons Why.[15] On June 30, 2017, Eilish released the single "Watch"[16] with a follow-up single, "Copycat" released on July 11, 2017, along with the announcement of her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me. Each Friday in July, Eilish would add another single to the EP. It was in this manner that the singles "Idontwannabeyouanymore" and "My Boy" were released.[17] Don't Smile at Me was released on August 12, 2017.[18] After the release, Eilish collaborated with American rapper Vince Staples for a remix of "Watch" titled "&Burn", which was later included on a re-release of the EP. In January 2018, Eilish announced the Where's My Mind Tour, which wrapped in August 2018.

For the Record Store Day of 2018, Eilish announced a 7" vinyl featuring an acoustic version of her song "Party Favor" and an acoustic cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling".

2018–present: Debut album

Eilish collaborated with American singer Khalid for the single "Lovely", which was released in April 2018 and added to the soundtrack for the second season of 13 Reasons Why.[19] That year also saw the release of singles "Bitches Broken Hearts" and "You Should See Me in a Crown".[20] Although there has been no official confirmation, it is highly speculated that one or more of these singles will appear on Eilish's debut album, which Eilish's brother Finneas confirmed would arrive in 2018.[21]
