Blumarine was established by Anna Molinari and Gianpaolo Tarabini in 1977, in the town of Carpi in the province of Modena. The name was inspired by the couple's favorite color and their love of the sea.[1] By the early 1980s they were presenting the collections during the Milan Fashion Week.[1]

As the brand took off Blufin was set up in 1988 to act as a holding company.[1] In the 1900s the first Blumarine boutique was opened in Via della Spiga, Milan.[2] The company now sells into more than 400 boutiques, of which 46 are own-brand boutiques.[1]
