The Botswana Power Corporation Workers' Union (BPCWU) is a union in Botswana that has been duly registered under the Botswana's Trade Unions and Employers' Organisation Act. The union was formed by employees of the corporation "to achieve common goals; such as protecting the integrity of its trade, improving safety standards, and attaining better wages, benefits (such as vacation, health care, and retirement), and working conditions through the increased bargaining power wielded by the creation of a monopoly of the workers. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers. The most common purpose of these associations or unions is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment". This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies."[1]

BPCWU is a trade union affiliate of the Botswana Federation of Trade Unions in Botswana. The union is recognised by Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and has entered into a Collective Labour Agreement with BPC. BPCWU is the only union that is recognised by BPC after the other previously recognised union, Middle Management Staff Union (MMSU), lost its recognition status.

Management of the Union

The union has a National Executive Committee that is tasked with the management of the union. This NEC is the highest decision making body between Annual General Meetings (AGM), whereas the AGM is the supreme decision-making body of the union. Members may join by filling application forms through their branches. Any applicant whose application has been rejected may seek a review of his/her application at the AGM and so will members whose membership has been terminated.
