Opened in 1961 as Brentwood Mall, the complex initially consisted of a partially open-air strip centre and enclosed mall. In the 1980s, a second level was added the enclosed section.
As of November 2014[update], the 11-hectare (28-acre) Brentwood Town Centre site is undergoing major redevelopment as part of a development initiative entitled "The Amazing Brentwood", which aims to create a master-planned neighbourhood. It will consist of 120,000 m2 (1,300,000 sq ft) of retail space, 46,000 m2 (500,000 sq ft) of office space, and multiple residential high-rise towers when complete.
