On December 7, 2023 a mass shooting occurred at Bryansk school in Bryansk, Russia. 2 students were killed and 5 others were wounded before the shooter, identified as 14-year-old Alina Afanaskina, committed suicide.[1][2]

Shooting

The message about the shooting at Gymnasium No. 5 in Bryansk was received by the city dispatch service at 9:15 Moscow time.[citation needed]

“According to preliminary information, one of the students brought a firearm into the gymnasium building and fired several shots,” reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation department for Bryansk region. The shooting took place in the biology classroom on the fourth floor. The girl hid a gun - a "Bekas-3" shotgun belonging to her father in a tube and brought it to the gymnasium.[3] It later became known that she also had a hunting knife with her.[citation needed]

Two people died as a result of the shooting, including the perpetrator, and five were injured. The condition of one of the injured was assessed as serious and four more were moderately injured. The remaining students were urgently evacuated and were sent home after the incident.[4]

14-year-old Alina, who opened fire, had a twin sister, who was also in the classroom at the time of the incident.[5] They came to the school together, but according to the investigators, the shooter's twin sister may not have known about her plans.[6]

Investigation

14-year-old Alina Afanaskina (Russian: Алина Афанаскина) an eighth-grade gymnasium student, is suspected of committing the crime. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 105 Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Afanaskina had been bullied since elementary school, and had conflict with students at Bryansk school.[3][7]

As State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein reported, among the shooter's personal belongings found at the crime scene were a backpack, a box of cartridges and notes that the girl “must definitely meet with a friend”.[8][9] The investigation of the shooting was taken control by Commissioner under the President of the Russian Federation for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.[citation needed]

The attacker's father was detained. He faces correctional labor for up to two years, or compulsory labor for up to 480 hours, or imprisonment for up to two years in accordance with Criminal Code 224.2 of the Russian Federation. Later, the father of an eighth-grader who committed a shooting at a Bryansk school was taken into custody and a criminal case was opened. He is charged with Article 110 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement to suicide).[10][11]

On December 9, Larisa Katolikova, deputy director of Gymnasium No. 5, where the shooting took place, was detained.[12] Katolikova was charged under Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - negligence that resulted in the death of two or more persons.[13]
