Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810–1871) was an author, Florida tax commissioner, lawyer, city councilman, territorial legislator, US State Department employee in Mexico and Spain, researcher of Spanish settlement in Florida and translator of documents from Spanish or Portuguese to English.[1][2][3] His survey work on the Florida Everglades is considered the first official publication on the area and suggested lowering the water table to develop agriculture in the area.[4] His estate aided African-Americans. He is listed as a Great Floridian. He published as Buckingham Smith. He was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1862.[5]
