Carol's Second Act is an American sitcom television series created by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, which premiered on September 26, 2019 on CBS in the United States and on Global in Canada.

Plot

After raising her two children and retiring from teaching, Carol Kenney embarks on a unique second act: pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor by beginning an internship at the Loyola Memorial Hospital.

Cast

Main

  • Patricia Heaton as Carol Kenney
  • Ito Aghayere as Dr. Maya Jacobs, the Chief Resident in charge of Carol and the other three interns. A type-A, high-achieving disciplinarian, Dr. Maya is all business. She's instantly annoyed because Carol is a chatty maverick who hates authority—and Dr. Maya and her authority are not up for debate.
  • Lucas Neff as Caleb Sommers, one of the members of Carol’s group of interns.
  • Jean-Luc Bilodeau as Daniel Kutcher, another member of Carol's group of interns. He graduated from Harvard in 2014 and from Harvard Medical School in 2018 and has already been published in The New England Journal of Medicine—twice.
  • Sabrina Jalees as Lexie Gilani, another member of Carol's group of interns.
  • Ashley Tisdale as Jenny Kenney, Carol's big-hearted daughter who became a pharmaceutical rep because, as a pretty and charming young woman, it's an easy job. Jenny loves and is supportive of Carol, and her practical and outgoing demeanor is a buoyant counterpoint to Carol's neurotic medical colleagues.
  • Kyle MacLachlan as Dr. Stephen Frost, handsome, affable and accomplished, he is the Senior Attending Physician on the ward (as well as the Department Chair) and thinks he's funnier than he is. Considerably more empathetic than Dr. Maya, Dr. Frost takes an immediate shine to Carol.

Development

On January 28, 2019, it was announced that CBS had given the production a pilot order. The pilot was written by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins who executive produces alongside with Heaton, Aaron Kaplan and David Hunt. Production companies involved with the pilot include FourBoys Entertainment, Kapital Entertainment and CBS Television Studios.[5] On February 12, 2019, it was announced that Pamela Fryman would direct the pilot.[6] On May 6, 2019, it was announced that the production had been given a series order.[7] A day after that, it was announced that the series would premiere in the fall of 2019 and air on Thursdays night entry in the 2019–2020 television season at 9:30 P.M.[8] The series is set to debut on September 26, 2019.[9]

Casting

In March 2019, it was announced that Bonnie Dennison, Ito Aghayere, Kyle MacLachlan and Jean-Luc Bilodeau had been cast in the pilot's lead roles.[10][11][12] On June 7, 2019, it was announced that Ashley Tisdale had replaced Dennison in the role of Jenny.[13]

The series marked Patricia Heaton's return to CBS for the first time since 2005, when Everybody Loves Raymond ended its run after nine seasons on the air; her subsequent series, ABC's The Middle, matched Raymond with its own nine-season run, which lasted from 2009 to 2018.

On May 15, 2019, CBS released the first official trailer for the series.[14]

Reception

Critical response

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 58% approval rating with an average rating of 5.63/10, based on 12 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "While Carol's Second Act earns high marks for bringing Patricia Heaton front and center, awkward plotting and lackluster jokes hold it back from living up to its star's high standards."[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 61 out of 100 based on 9 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[16]
