This category (and similarly Category:Date of birth unknown) is intended placement on the talk pages of articles about people, mainly historical, whose year of death is known, but the month and day are lost and not likely to be found. "Date of death unknown" may also be used for people from the more recent past who died in circumstances which mean their exact death date is unknown.

Historically-recent people whose date of death is likely to have been recorded and could be researched should be included in Category:Date of death missing.

"Date of death unknown" and Category:Year of death unknown, which is used with individuals whose end-of-life statistics are presumed to be irretrievably lost, as well as Category:Year of death missing, are intended to be mutually exclusive.
