The Bendahara dynasty of Johor lend its name from its founding ruler, Sultan Abdul Jalil Riayat Shah IV who served as a Bendahara prior to his ascension as the Sultan of the Johor-Riau empire. Members of the Temenggong dynasty (founded by Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor) traces its descent back to Sultan Abdul Jalil Riayat Shah IV. The Temenggong dynasty was founded as its founding ruler, Sultan Abu Bakar was a Temenggong prior to his ascension to the throne, and many of his ancestors had served as Temenggongs before him.
