Bianca King, a longtime contract star of GMA Network, has just signed a “program contract” with TV5 that will allow her to headline the Kapatid station’s new primetime weekly drama, “Obsession”.

During the contract signing on Monday at the Aracama restaurant in Taguig City, the 28-year-old actress said she was very excited to take on the role of Vanessa, a woman madly in love and obsessed with her former lover.

Initially going by the name of Bernadette in the series as played by the controversial Neri Naig, Bianca takes over the role after the character undergoes a new identity following cosmetic surgery. The series also stars Marvin Agustin as the cosmetic surgeon and Martin Escudero as the object of Vanessa’s unrequited affection.

“My character is psychotic, conniving and scheming but she can also be her regular normal self when not obsessed with her former lover. I get to tackle a whole range of emotions in this series so I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Bianca enthused in the press conference that followed.

She said her strong desire to try everything and realize her full potential as an artist is what motivated her to accept the project. TV5 chief content entertainment officer Wilma V. Galvante said that when the network was considering actresses for the project, she only had Bianca in mind for the lead role.

“I can’t really think of anyone else more suited for this kind of role. Bianca’s facial expressions alone makes her perfect for this project and I know she’s been wanting to do an intense drama project like this,” Galvante noted.

Bianca’s manager, Ronnie Henares also pointed to the fact that it was Galvante, a former GMA top executive, who guided Bianca’s career when she was just starting out.

“Bianca is a WVG baby. Wilma watched her career grow. That’s why they’re very close to each other,” Henares added.

Asked if Bianca’s signing is some kind of special arrangement with GMA, given all the rumors about the possible acquisition of the Kapuso network by TV5 chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, TV5 president and CEO Noel C. Lorenzana said it is neither one.

“GMA has expressed openness about lending their talents to us. In turn, we at TV5 have shown that we can give good projects for their talents,” Lorenzana elaborated.

Bianca, who had recently finished a filmmaking course, also expressed her interest to work behind the camera.

“I was the right hand girl of director Erik Matti when he was doing post-production work for ‘On The Job’. I have also been mentored by Dondon Monteverde, who is also from Direk Erik’s Reality Entertainment production company,” she revealed.

Bianca said that while she hopes to direct her first TV commercial soon and later, her first feature film, her immediate goal is to further expand her horizons as an actress. She considers “Obsession” a “huge milestone” in her career.

“I know that there is a great responsibility attached to being the lead star of a series. Kailangan ikaw ang pinakamasipag, pinakalisto at pinaka-active sa pag-promote nito and I’m ready for all that,” she promised.

As for what it’s like to work with another network since starting her career with GMA in 2004, Bianca has only kind words for TV5.

“It’s been overwhelming. They (TV5) are very warm and welcoming. It’s so easy to fall in love with the work environment here,” she enthused.

“Obsession” premieres on January 23 at 8PM on TV5.
