CIPET or Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology is an autonomous institute under the department of chemicals and petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.[1][2]

History[edit]

CIPET headquarters was established at Chennai in 1968 with UNDP assistance. It receives funding support from the administration ministry, OPEC, UNIDO and the World Bank. It is believed that CIPET was founded by Brigadier. A F. Eugene. who is also the founder of MES.

Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) was established in 1968 by Government of India with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at Chennai. The main objective of setting up of the institute was to develop manpower in different disciplines of Plastics Engineering & Technology as no similar institute was in existence in the country. International Labour Organization (ILO) served as the executing agency. During the initial project period between 1968 and 1973, the institute achieved the targets envisaged and was rated as one of the most successful UNDP projects implemented worldwide. Today CIPET is a premier national institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of India fully devoted to Skill Development, Technology Support Services, Academic and Research (STAR). CIPET operates on hub & spokes model with 28 locations - 5 High Learning Centres, 12 Other Learning Centres, 3 Specialized Centres, 2 R & D Wings, 5 Vocational Training Centre, 1 Petrochemical Data Services spread across the country catering to the needs of Polymer and allied industries. 11 more centres are in the process of establishment.

CIPET stands tall not only as a premier institute in the country but also emerged as a global institution renowned for its research & development in the niche areas of Polymer Science & Technology and high quality Education & Skill development in the field of plastics. CIPET has been accredited with ISO 9001:2008 QMS, ISO/IEC - 17025, ISO/IEC - 17020 certification on Design, Development and Conduct of specialized training courses in Plastics Engineering & Technology and rendering technical /consultancy services in design, tooling, plastics processing & testing for the benefit of plastics & allied industry. Besides, STAR activities, CIPET also plays pivotal role in generating employment opportunities especially for unemployed and underemployed youth, promoting entrepreneurs though various skill development training programs.

Headquartered in Chennai, CIPET has centres at Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Aurangabad, Baddi, Balasore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Hajipur, Haldia, Imphal, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Madurai, Murthal, Mysore, Raipur, Valsad and Vijayawada. All the state-of-the-art centers are equipped with excellent infrastructure facilities in the areas of Design, CAD/CAM/CAE, Tooling & Mould Manufacturing, Plastics processing, Testing and Quality Assurance with plan fund support from Government of India. The infrastructure facilities in terms machinery, equipments and technology are continuously upgraded and modernized in tune with needs of plastics & allied industries.

CIPET renders Technology Support Service in the areas of design, tooling, plastics processing and testing and quality assurance in India and abroad. CIPET has been in the forefront of strengthening the technological capabilities and has been constantly building capacities and leveraging its expertise, caliber and skill sets to meet the emerging and evolving needs of the industries.

CIPET works in close liaison with industries to implement its initiatives in the areas of Polymer and allied industries in accordance with the environmental policies of the country. CIPET's sustained efforts in creating awareness on environmental issues towards plastics and plastics waste management has been very well received by the industry.

Facilities[edit]

This is the only institute of this kind in India where all facilities like design, tooling, processing and testing of plastics are available under one roof.[citation needed] CIPET caters to the needs of plastic industries through manpower training, processing, design and CAD/CAM/CAE, testing, consultancy, advisory and developmental services.

To meet the needs of plastics conversion industry, CIPET has established extension centres in many states of the country. Each centre of the CIPET has been equipped with machinery in the area of mould/product design and development, CAD, plastic processing and testing/quality control. Apart from developing training manpower and technical services for plastics industries, each centre has been entrusted with a specific thrust area for development.

Admission[edit]

Admissions to diploma and post diploma courses are done by CIPET-JEE. Short term courses admissions are held often. For Undergraduate and Postgraduate and Doctoral research programs the admission is through respective universities affiliated to. Contact individual centers for further information.

CIPET has been functioning with a global vision to create plastics technology professionals and entrepreneurs and contribute towards sustainable growth of plastics & allied industry. To achieve its objectives, CIPET is offering a wide range of Academic Programs in various disciplines of Plastic Engineering & Technology with varying levels of entry qualification leading to Diploma, Post Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate and Doctoral programs.

CIPET provides a perfect ambience conducive for learning and has been consistent in maintaining excellence in the academic standards. With experienced faculty, enriched library, stimulating research opportunity and modern infrastructure facilities, CIPET blends of modern day teaching techniques with a traditional emphasis on imparting technical knowledge that makes learning an enjoyable experience. The institute focus on Long term professional skill development programs (Academic) and Short term vocational skill development programs.

The academic pursuits are categorized into the following four levels in accordance with the human resource requirement of Indian Polymer & allied industries.

  • Level I - Doctoral, Postgraduate & undergraduate Programs are high-ended Programs at High Learning Centre.
  • Level II - Conventional CIPET's Diploma, Post Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma Programs at all CIPET Centres.
  • Level III - Industry specific Programs.
  • Level IV - Operator level Programs including non-conventional Programs at Selected Centres of CIPET.

CIPET has been instrumental in fostering excellence in learning, research and innovation. Forging its academic character through a value system, and culture that incorporates the best teachings, training and practices, CIPET has been nurturing high quality training over the years and in the process has churned out several top notch professionals.

The course curriculum is designed to cater to the needs of Plastics conversion industry, Academia, Research & Development organizations. The teaching methodology includes classroom lectures, expert lectures through Video Conference, self-learning, assignments, projects, practical sessions and periodical evaluation.

Besides, regular full time courses, CIPET also offers industry specific/oriented Short-term technology up-gradation/ modular/ tailor-made programs to help technical personnel working in different fields of Plastics and allied industries to further enhance their knowledge and acquaint themselves with the latest trends, technology and development.
