Moran played three years of junior hockey before enrolling at Niagara, the first two with the Buffalo Lightning of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League and the third year with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League. In his second season with the Lightning he finished second in overall league scoring and earned the distinction as the first U.S.-born player on the U.S. based team to be named the Ontario Hockey Association's Junior-A Player of the Year.
