Clash Royale is a 2016 freemium mobile strategy video game developed and published by Supercell, a video game company based in Helsinki, Finland.[1] The game combines elements from collectible card games, tower defense games, and MOBA's.[2][3][4] Clash Royale borrows its setting from an earlier Supercell game, Clash of Clans.

The game was released globally for iOS and Android on March 2, 2016.[5]

Release

The game was initially soft-launched in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and New Zealand for iOS platforms on January 4, 2016.[6] The game was soft-launched on Android for those same countries on February 16, 2016.[7] Both platforms received a global release on March 2, 2016.[5]

Upon its release, Clash Royale became the most downloaded and top-grossing app on the US iOS App Store.[8]

Cards

The game is fought with cards. A card deck includes 8 cards chosen by the player to be their battle deck. The total amount of cards to be owned is 48. Cards have a rarity of common, rare, epic, and legendary. The three kinds of cards are troop, building, and spell. More cards are unlocked at each new arena, which is based on the player's amount of trophies, which can be gained or lost in battles. Cards can bought in Shop for Gold or unlocked in chests. A card can be upgraded with gold if a player obtains a certain number of the same card(The particular number increases as the upgrade level increase; the pattern is like so).

Level: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, respectively.

Chests

Chests give off gold, gems, and cards. Chests can be obtained in battle, a free chest once every 4 hours, and can also be bought in shop with gems. Types of chests include: Wooden chests (only during the tutorial), free chests, silver chests, golden chests, crown chests (every 10 crowns gained from battles), giant chests, magical chests, and super magical chests. Generally, the value of the chests rank in this order. Chests obtained in battle take time to unlock(3, 8, and 12 hours for silver, golden and magical chests respectively), and free chests, crown chests, and chests bought from shop can be opened immediately. The Giant chest, Magical chest, and Super Magical chest can be bought from the shop with gems, the cost varying by a player's Arena level. The resources provided in a chest also varies by the player's arena level; a higher arena (higher arena levels cost more too) will offer more cards, gold, etc. Similarly, a higher value chest will have more chance of giving higher rarity cards and more cards, gold, etc. (A Golden chest is supposed to give at least 1 rare, a Magical chest at least one epic, and a Super magical chest gives multiple epics and possibly 1 legendary)

Critical Reception

Clash Royale received mainly a positive reaction, with TouchArcade's Eli Hodapp calling it "absolutely phenomenal" in his five star review.[4] Pocket Gamer's Harry Slater gave the game a score of 9/10, summing up "It's an incredible amount of rewarding fun, it's nail-biting at times, and there's content here that will keep you busy for weeks if not months."[9]

However, the game's monetization model was criticized. Writing for Geek.com, James Plafke opined "Clash Royale is a very fun game — legit fun, not Clash of Clans “fun” — but Supercell does everything in its power to prevent you from actually playing the damn thing."[10]
