"Come & Get It"
Song

"Come & Get It" is a song recorded by American singer Selena Gomez for her solo debut studio album, Stars Dance (2013). The song was written by Ester Dean, M.S. Eriksen, and T.E. Hermansen[3] and was produced by Stargate.[4][5] The vocals were produced by Dreamlab and Dean and Dean. "Come & Get It" was released as an official single on April 7, 2013 after previously premiering on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show.[6] "Come & Get It" features a change in style from Gomez's previous releases, and features elements of electropop and Indian music.[7] The song's lyrics speak of a female lover's attempt to rekindle a previously ended romance.[8] Following the song's release, there was much media speculation as to whom the song was written about.[9]

Upon its release, "Come & Get It" received positive reviews from music critics. The song was praised for its musical diversity,[10] as well as its Bhangra beat,[11] its "Bollywood" themes and lyrical content.[12] The song also had a strong commercial success, peaking inside the Top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100.[12] It also rose to a peak of number two on the Pop Songs chart, based on radio airplay.[13] This made "Come & Get It" her first single to enter the Top 10 of the Hot 100, with all of her previous musical efforts failing to achieve this feat. The song also had success in Canada, entering the Top 10 of the Canadian Hot 100 chart.[14] In New Zealand, the song peaked inside the Top 20 of the singles chart.[15] "Come & Get It" was released on July 14 in the United Kingdom for digital download. It reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart on July 21 in the first week.

The song's music video premiered on MTV on May 7, 2013.[16] The video, much like the single, featured Indian influences and saw Gomez performing the song in various different outfits.[17] Throughout the video, Gomez performs a dance routine used during the song's various live performances.[18] The video has received positive critical reception. Gomez has performed the single at many events, including the 2013 Billboard Music Awards and the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. These performances were met with controversy due to Gomez wearing a bindi during various live renditions of the song.[19] "Come & Get It" is also set to be performed on the Stars Dance Tour, set to run through 2013.[20][21]

Background

Gomez first signed with Hollywood Records in 2008, opting rather to form a band than release solo material.[22] This led to the formation of Selena Gomez & the Scene, which featured Gomez on lead vocals.[23] With the group, Gomez released a total of three studio albums and seven official singles,[24][25] three of which received Platinum certifications from the RIAA.[26] Following this, Gomez confirmed that the band would take a hiatus throughout 2012 to allow Gomez to focus on her acting career.[27] In October of that year, however, Gomez began working on new music, later revealed to be her debut solo album.[28][29] In March 2013, Gomez confirmed that the album's lead single, "Come & Get It", would be released on April 8, 2013.[30] Despite this, the song later leaked online on April 6.[31] This prompted Gomez to release the song early, with "Come & Get It" becoming available for digital download later that night.[32][33]

Critical reception

After being released, the song received positive reviews from music critics, who noted Gomez's maturing image and new sound. Kyle Anderson of Entertainment Weekly described it as "an easy, breezy tune with an ambling melody and a hint of reggae lilt."[34] Jessica Sager of Popcrush gave it a mixed review, stating that "the track is a change and a shift, and it was a risk. Gomez may win new fans with the song since it’s pretty far outside of her usual bubblegum Disney box, and her loyal Selenators will likely eat it up regardless. However, for fans of pure pop, they may want to stick with her ex boyfriend".[35] Meanwhile, Bradley Stern of MuuMuse.com has referenced it as one of Rihanna's tracks from her sixth studio album Talk That Talk but gave it a positive review, stating that “Come & Get It” is fairly monotone, but repeat listens reveal the song’s infectiousness: The chorus–especially with that stuttered chant at the end–is pure sticky pop goodness, the stomping beat is smutty enough to inspire a sick strut, and that whirring Bollywood-meets-tribal-electro synth sound lends itself well to some grind-up-against-the-wall make-out action up in the club." On-air personality, Peter Dee said, "her breathy vocals are just what the song needed to fuse the Bollywood and electro-pop sound, and make it work."[36][36]

Music video

The video had its world premiere on May 7, 2013 on MTV.[16] It starts off with Gomez in a meadow of Texas bluebonnets wearing a black dress at the start of a storm. It then shows waves, a close shot of Gomez and the man she loves. She then starts singing and she wears a red dress while dancing moves that she has performed in various live performances of the song. It then shows images of Gomez emerging in water, sliding between mirrors, in the same meadow wearing a tan dress, and her Indian dancers. The video then ends with Gomez in the same meadow wearing her black dress lying in the grass as the storm fades. It was directed by Anthony Mandler, known for his frequent collaborations with Rihanna.[37]

Five videos of five remixes of the song were uploaded to Gomez's VEVO on June 18, 2013.[38] As of July 18, the video has brought in 82,671,386 views on YouTube, in the space of one month.[citation needed]

Live performances

Gomez first performed "Come & Get It" at the MTV Movie Awards[39] on April 14, 2013. Two days later, she made her first televised performance of the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Dancing with the Stars. She performed "Come & Get It" and "Love You Like A Love Song" on MTV Upfronts 2013. She also performed the song on Late Show With David Letterman on April 24. Gomez performed the song at the Radio Disney Music Awards on April 27. Gomez performed the track at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.[39] On May 24, she performed the song on The Graham Norton Show in the UK. The song was part of the set list from the shows that she made for two radio stations on June 29 and on July 1, 2013. She also performed "Come & Get It" and "Slow Down" on Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks. On July 17 Gomez performed the song on the UK program This Morning.
