Crudia zeylanica (Sinhala: පණු කරඳ), sometimes known as Sri Lanka Legume, is a species of legume in the family Fabaceae endemic to Sri Lanka.[2] Once thought to be extinct,[3] the plant was rediscovered in 2019 by three young research scientists including Himesh Dilruwan Jayasinghe.[4]
Rediscovery
This tree which was once thought to be extinct with last confirmed reporting in 1911. It was known only from the herbarium specimens. In 2019, the plant was rediscovered in a small plot of forest land located close to the Daraluwa Railway Station in Gampaha in several places in Gampaha District.[5] it since has been found to be thriving in the Gampaha district according to the director general of department of wildlife conservation
Conservation effort
On 7 February 2021, Gampaha Division Wildlife Officer Devani Jayathilaka visited to a construction site of the expressway from Kadawatha to Meerigama and diecovered a Crudia zeylanica plant.[6] She immediately prevented the workers from destroying it and informed the personnel regarding the matter. The news made a huge media circus in Sri Lanka, where several authorities cited the value of the tree and prevented it from being cut.[7]
Meanwhile on 10 February 2021, the plant was ordained by the Buddhist Clergy from the National Bhikku Front.[8]
