Dark alternative music[neologism?] is music that is "dark" (in the metaphorical sense of darkness) and "alternative" (in the sense of being a musical alternative to more conventional or popular forms). In Germany, this genre falls under the term schwarze szene, which "translates to 'black scene' and [has been] used since the 1990s to describe all the so called dark alternative music styles swirling around Goth: industrial, darkwave, electro, metal, neofolk and medieval, and for some reason also including BDSM/fetish culture".[1]
