Liga 2
Season2025–26
DatesAugust 2025 – May 2026
2026–27 →

The 2025–26 Liga 2 will be the ninth season of the Liga 2 under its current name and the 16th season under its current league structure. This season is the first to use Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the history of Indonesian second division.[1]

Format

[edit]

For the first time since the 2020 season, the composition of teams competing in League 2 is divided into two regions with slight adjustments and using a triple round-robin system.[2]

Overview

[edit]

Promotion and relegation (pre-season)

[edit]

20 teams will compete in the league – the fourteen teams from the previous season, three teams relegated from the Liga 1 and three teams promoted from Liga Nusantara.

Teams promoted to Liga 1

[edit]

On 12 February 2025, Bhayangkara Presisi became the first team to be promoted, assuring an immediate return to the top division following 0–0 draw against Persijap in the matchweek 5 of Group Y in the championship round.[3]

PSIM became the second team to be promoted on 17 February 2025. The victory over PSPS in the matchweek 6 of Group X in the championship round ended their 18 seasons in the second division since the formation of the Indonesian Super League (now Liga 1) in the 2008-09 season.[4]

Persijap became the third and last team to be promoted on 25 February 2025. The victory over PSPS in the promotion play-off ended their 11 seasons in the second division.[5]

Teams relegated from Liga 1

[edit]

Teams promoted from Liga Nusantara

[edit]

On 17 February 2025, Tornado became the first team to be promoted thanks to a win over PSGC in the matchweek 5 of Group X in the championship round. This season marks Tornado's debut in the second division of the Indonesian League.[6]

Sumut United and Persiba Balikpapan immediately returned to the second division after a single-season absent with the results obtained in each match. Sumut United promoted on 23 February 2025 following 1–5 win at away match against NZR Sumbersari in the matchweek 6 of Group Y in the championship round and Persiba promoted on 27 February 2025 after beating PSGC in a penalty shootout in the promotion play-off.[7][8]

Teams relegated to Liga Nusantara

[edit]

The first three teams to be relegated were Nusantara United, Persikabo 1973, and Persikota due to the results obtained in their respective matches on 10 February 2025. Nusantara United and Persikota drew but it was not enough to save them from relegation while Sriwijaya won over PSMS in the matchweek 5 of Group H in the relegation round.[9][10]

Nusantara United returned to the third division after three seasons in the second division while Persikota immediately return to the third division after gaining promotion in the previous season. For Persikabo 1973, this relegation was the second in a row and they only stayed in the second division for one season thanks to their defeat by Adhyaksa in the matchweek 5 of Group I in the relegation round.[11]

RANS Nusantara became the fourth team to be relegated on 13 February 2025 after losing to Persipal in the matchweek 6 of Group K in the relegation round, making them relegated for the second time in a row and only remaining in the second division for one season.[12]

Gresik United, Persewar, and Persipa were relegated after being in the second division for three and six seasons respectively due to the results they achieved in their respective matches.

Persewar relegated on 16 February 2025 after suffering defeat in the matchweek 8 of Group J in the relegation round, Persipa relegated on 21 February 2025 after Persipura won against RANS Nusantara in the matchweek 9 of Group K in the relegation round and Gresik United relegated on 25 February 2025 after Persibo won over Persewar in the matchweek 10 of Group J in the relegation round.[13][14][15]

Meanwhile, Dejan and Persibo immediately returned to the third division after suffering defeats in their respective matches.

Dejan relegated on 15 February 2025 after suffering defeat to Adhyaksa in the matchweek 6 of Group I in the relegation round and Persibo relegated on 28 February 2025 after lost to Persipura on relegation play-off which takes place with a single match system.[16][17]
