"Algo Bonito" is a song by Puerto Rican recording artists iLe and Ivy Queen. The song was written by iLe, Queen, David Pinto and the producer Ismael Cancel. It was featured on iLe's third studio album, Nacarile (2022).
The song received positive reviews from critics who praised the collaboration and lyrical content of the song. It is a feminist record.
Background
[edit]Composition sessions for the album began during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020. While iLe was writing "Algo Bonito", her brother suggested that she collaborate with Ivy Queen. Following the suggestion, she determined that Queen would be a "great" addition to the track, enlisting her participation. Queen loved the direction of the song and thus recorded verses.[1]
Speaking of the collaboration, iLe called Queen's participation as a "reminder that thanks to voices like hers, the fight as women is stronger than ever."[2] Queen expressed excitement about the collaboration, praising iLe’s previous musical outputs.[2]
Musical composition
[edit]The song begins with a thudding dembow rhythm which was created by iLe herself using audio creation software.[3]
Lyrically, the song has been described as a feminist anthem. An editor for the Washington Post claimed it to "reject society's efforts to control women and their bodies."[4]
Critical reception
[edit]Griffin Lotz for Rolling Stone expressed positive sentiments toward the song, calling it a "defiant highlight" of the album.[1] The song was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2023 Premios Rolling Stone en Español.[5] People en Español’s Leonela Taveras called the song a power collaboration that celebrates women, highlighting "feminine beauty and liberation."[6]
The song’s music video was nominated for Music Video of the Year at the 2023 Premios Juventud.[7] At the 2023 Video Prisma Awards, presented annually by the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival in Argentina, it received an award for Best Social Impact Music Video.[8] During the 2023 Bogotá Music Video Festival, a festival held annually in Colombia, it was nominated for Best Latin American music video.[9]
Music video
[edit]iLe and Queen met for the first time in early 2023 during recording of the song's music video.[1] The music video was directed by Claudia Calderón and included a woman-led set. It's music video features "symbolism from Old Westerns and samurai films.[1]
Jeanette Hernandez for Remezcla called its visual's "empowering."[2]
