Founded in 2014 as a Pennsylvania-baed non-profit organization, the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) develops and implements board certification examinations for MRI safety professional roles originally described in a collaborative publication authored by representatives from many of the world's leading MRI societies.[1] The first ABMRS exams were administered in 2015.
From 2015 to 2026, the ABMRS administered certification examinations for the roles described in the 2016 publication, those of MR Medical Director (MRMD), MR Safety Officer (MRSO), and MR Safety Expert. In 2026 the organization added a certification exam for the role of MR Safety Technologist (MRST).[2][3] The ABMRS does not routinely release information on the numbers of diplomates with any of the ABMRS certifications.
As of January 2026, the ABMRS administers certification exams in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom at Prometric testing centers.[4][5]
The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ABMRS to facilitate MRI safety certification examinations for MRSE credentials in the United Kingdom. IPEM utilizes the ABMRS certification for MRSE in conjunction with its own practical considerations.[6]
The ABMRS' Board of Directors are made up of radiologists, medical physicists, MRI technologists / radiographers, and others with MRI safety expertise. While the organization's name begins with "the American Board," the composition of the Board of Directors shows international representation.[7]
