Amir Shah is the youngest male ballet dancer from India to represent the country at London's Royal Ballet School. This teenager grew up with six siblings in a low-income area of Mumbai, India. Now studying at one of the world’s most prestigious ballet schools, he has been called "India's Billy Elliot"
Early Life :
Before beginning his dance career, Amir (Amiruddin Shah) used to go to practice hip hop steps and perform tricks in the park.
Career Journey :
Amir received a scholarship from the Danceworx Performing Arts Academy in Mumbai, thanks to Artistic Director and renowned choreographer Ashley Lobo. At the time, he was enrolled in a jazz class. By coincidence, he met internationally well-known ballet master Yehuda Ma'or. During one class, Yehuda noticed Amir and asked him to stretch his feet; this began Amir's ballet career.
Career Detail :
Amir started his first class at the Danceworx in 2013 ,where he learnt and mastered various dance styles like jazz and contemporary, as well as theatre acting.
2014 : In 2014, Amir started his training more intensively and he started doing classes like ballet and contemporary. He also began rehearsing privately with Danceworx's director. The schedule used to be tight and he started taking his dancing more seriously.
2015: In 2015, Amir was asked to take ballet class with Mr. Yehuda Ma'or, who used to give advanced classes to the company. Maor's class was very informative, detailed, and more advanced at the barre and in centre.
2016 - 2017 : After a couple years training with Ma'or, Ma'or decided to send Amir to study abroad to master his skills and training in ballet. He received a full scholarship from the Joffrey Ballet School in New York but couldn't attend due to visa issues. Amir continued training with Ma'or, and in November, he received a full scholarship from the Oregon Ballet Theatre. After 3 months, Amir auditioned for American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York and was accepted after the artistic director saw his audition video.[1]
He was funded largely by billionaire businessman Yusuf Hamied.[2]
He was later accepted into the Royal Ballet School in London, where he currently studies.[3]
His journey, along with that of fellow ballet dancer Manish Chauhan, has been documented by screenwriter, director, and photographer Sooni Taraporevala, in her virtual reality film "Yeh Ballet."[4]
