Early Life[edit]
Staring in 1979, Strassmeir served in the West German military and eventually made the rank of infantry officer. He was discharged from the German Army in 1988. [2]
Time in the U.S.[edit]
Andreas Strassmeir came to the United States in May 1991 with a passport that didn't expire until August of that same year, as indicated in records held by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
However, In a series of five interviews with The Telegraph, he said that he first lived in the US in 1989 because he was planning to work on a special assignment for the US Justice Department.[3] According to retired air force colonel Vincent Petruskie, Strassmeir came to the US wanting to work for the United States Government, thinking that his background in military and the German government would help get such him a job. Petruskie then explained to Strassmeir that he lacked education and a proper citizenship. In the end, Strassmeir says that he went to Texas and started working as a salesman for a computer company.[4]
Numerous FBI interview statements obtained by online journalist J.M. Berger reveal that Strassmeir was a member of the Texas Light Infantry Militia, also known as the Texas Reserve Militia.[5][6][7][8]
Friendship With Timothy McVeigh[edit]
Andreas Strassmeir is identified as being in Timothy McVeigh's company by multiple witnesses, including employees of a strip club in Tulsa called Lady Godiva’s.[9] However, his attorney, Kirk Lyons, claims that Strassmeir only briefly met McVeigh at a gun show.[10]
According to defense documents containing information provided by Timothy McVeigh during his trial, McVeigh admitted to meeting Strassmeir in 1993, along with two of his companions, at a gun show in Tulsa where they discussed the Waco siege. Strassmeir invited McVeigh to visit Elohim City, which McVeigh said he did, several months later.[11][12]
Residence At Elohim City[edit]
In an interview conducted by Special Agent Angela Finley-Graham, Carol Howe provided the ATF with a substantial amount of information on Strassmeir. According to Howe, he personally informed her about the existence of a black market dealer who had access to grenades, C-4 and a range of explosives. One instance, in what appeared to be a loyalty test, Srassmeir made Howe crawl on the ground under barbed wire while firing his pistol at her feet. [13]
The same documented report also states that Strassmeir would train paramilitary soldiers at Elohim City in various combat maneuvers. His paramilitary troops were also exposed to extreme training conditions including camping outside in 14 degree weather and forced to swim in a creek in those frigid temperatures.[14]
According to Timothy McVeigh, Strassmeir and other residents of Elohim City were fearful of a Waco-type raid on their own community. [15]
Connection To The Oklahoma City Bombing[edit]
Following the Oklahoma City Bombing, Strassmeir's name began to surface in the McCurtain Daily Gazette after reporters began to interview residents of Elohim City.[16]
Records from a telephone calling card used by Timothy McVeigh indicate that he placed a call to Andreas Strassmeir at Elohim City on April 5, 1995. [17]
In Carol Howe's testimony, she claims to have seen Timothy McVeigh in Elohim City in July 1994 with Andreas Carl Strassmeir and Peter Ward.[18]
Strassmeir emphatically denied any involvement in the bombing, which, in truth, was not linked to him by any solid evidence. The FBI, after failing to interview him while he was in the country despite his dealings with Oklahoma radicals, only talked to him by phone nine months after the bombing.
Several employees at Lady Godvia's have identified pictures of Strassmeir and Brescia as the men who accompanied Timothy McVeigh on April 8, 1995 at the strip club. Dale Culpepper, the club's bouncer, remembers escorting rowdy strippers out of the club that same night and seeing one of them squat to urinate behind a Ryder truck with its logo painted over, quite possibly the same one that was used in the bombing.[19]
John Doe #2 Theory[edit]
Some believe that Andreas Strassmeir looks like the drawing of John Doe #2, the second perpetrator to the Oklahoma City Bombing (Timothy McVeigh being John Doe #1). The composite sketch was based on a mechanic’s recollection of two people that picked up the bomb truck from Elliott’s Body Shop in Junction City, Kan., two days before the bombing.[20][21] Officially, bank robber Michael William Brescia was convicted as John Doe #2 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.[22]
Alleged Involvement With The Federal Government[edit]
One commonly speculated theory suggests that Andreas Strassmeir was aided by and was working for the United States Federal Government.[23]
Vincent Petruskie, a retired US Air Force colonel, claims that he helped Strassmeir try to get a job in the Drug Enforcement Agency and the United States Treasury. [24][25] Strassmeir refers to Petruskie "a former CIA guy my father had known when he was stationed in Berlin during the Cold War".[26][27]
In May 20, 1996, Glenn and Kathy Wilburn, who had lost their two grandsons in the bombing, announced to The Daily Telegraph (in Electronic Issue 387) that they were going to name Strassmeir in a lawsuit as a US federal informant with material knowledge of the bombing. The couple supposedly possess accumulated evidence which they claim indicates Strassmeir was an undercover US agent who, while based at Elohim City, penetrated the white separatist movement and alerted the authorities about the impending attack.[28][29]
Departure From The U.S.[edit]
In 1996, four months after the bombing, Strassmeir left the US and moved back to Germany. His departure from the country is suspected to be aided by ex-CIA pilot Dave Holloway, as mentioned in an FBI report on Hollaway. [30] Dave was also the legal partner of white-supremacist lawyer, Kirk Lyons, the executive director of the now-defunct CAUSE Foundation. [31][32][33]
