The Dighi of Mashajan is located in Mashajan village, five miles south of Habiganj district town in the Sylhet division of Bangladesh.[1] The founder of this dighi is the famous intellectual Syed Gwas Uddin, who established it within a two hundred acre boundary in the early sixteenth century.[2] Syed Gwas Uddin was the eldest son of the epic poet Syed Sultan[3] and the sixth descendant of Sipahsalar Syed Nasir Uddin, a conqueror of Sylhet and Taraf. The beautiful and vast lake is recognized as a tourist attraction in Bangladesh

Characteristics of Dighi

[edit]

Surrounded by dense vegetation, the long square-shaped dighi has a bottom with numerous small and uneven rock fragments. These rocks, which have not been scientifically tested, are said to be consistent with meteorites. The water is so clear that the bottom is visible, yet it lacks crustaceans, aquatic plants, common insects, or leeches. Despite this, the lake is home to various fish. Local people believe that bathing in the lake can cure skin diseases, although this has not been scientifically verified. A popular legend attributes these phenomena to a miracle by Syed Gwas Uddin, known as wali's miracle (Karamat). There are other reservoirs like Dighi of Mashajan which are associated with the Karamat of Auliyae Kiram. Notable among them are the miracles of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and Ana Sagar.[3]
