Extinction (also known as Clever Kid), produced by Pooya Art Group, is an animated film in the adventure genre produced in 2023, directed by Behnoud Nekooei, Hadi Mohammadian and Mohammad Javad Jannati, written by Ali Ramadan and produced by Hamed Jafari. Hooman Haji Abdollahi, Javad Pezeshkian, Hedayat Hashemi and Mir-taher Mazloomi under the supervision of Saeed Sheikhzadeh make up the voice actors of the film. Extinction narrates the adventures of a boy named Mohsen who wants to help others like superheroes; Until the appearance of a tiger brings him closer to his lifelong dream of becoming a superhero.

This is the third animated film of Pooya Art Group after Princess of Rome (2014) and The Elephant King (2017). Extinction is a joint product of Poya Art Group and Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA),[1] and it was created in Pooya Art Group with the participation of nearly 250 young Iranians between 2018 and 2023.[2]

Extinction was first screened on 1st February 2023 at the 41st Fajr Film Festival and Hamed Jafari received Simorgh Crystal of the best animated film for the production of Extinction. Its general release started on September 27, 2023, and the film sold 15 million dollars during its general release.[3]

Plot

Mohsen Rahmati is a boy who loves superhero movies and always tries to help everyone and everything with his superhero equipment. But in a rare event, Mohsen encounters a tiger that is an extinct animal species of Iran (Mazandaran tiger) and decides to help that animal and bring him back to his hometown Mazandaran.[4]

Production

The animation of Extinction was produced by Poya Art Group, and the Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Adolescents and Poya Art Group were introduced as the only investors of this movie.[5] Hamed Jafari, the producer of this movie, said that the production of this animation has started since the beginning of 2017, and the ideation of this animation lasted for 8 months. But due to the spread of Corona Virus, there was a break in it.[6] According to Jafari, this animation was produced in two versions. The first version is Iranian and for Muslim countries and the other version is for non-Muslim countries.

In the dubbing of Extinction, more than 100 human and animal characters are present in addition to the diversity and multiplicity of climatic locations and plans.[7] Amir Tavassoli is the producer of the film's soundtrack and Ismail Karari was in charge of the production management. Extinction was edited by Hasan Ayoubi, and Hossein Abolsadegh was responsible for the sound design and composition.

According to the CEO of Poya Art Group, the design of Extinction animation is based on the successful models of famous companies in the world, and the goal of this project is "an important and forward step in the field of completing the characterization chain for children and teenagers". In this regard, 400 products based on this work have been designed in the field of publishing and toys.[8]

Rename

The primary name of production was Extinction. About changing the title of IIDCYA first cinematic animation, Hamed Jafari said, “The title of the animation that is a joint production of Pooya Art Group and IIDCYA was “Extinction”, but after considering various markets and reviewing internal and external feedbacks, we decided to change the name of the film to “Clever Kid”.[9]

Release

A version of Extinction animation was shown for the first time on the fourth day of the 41st Fajr International Film Festival.[10] Filmiran is responsible for broadcasting this animation and it was released in September 2023.[11] The contract for the release of Extinction animated film directed by Behnoud Nekooei, Hadi Mohammadian and Mohammad Javad Jannati and produced by Hamed Jafari was signed with the distribution of Filmiran under the leadership of Pardis Koresh.[12]
