Giuseppe Benito Commisso is an American business executive and sports administrator who has served as chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Mediacom, the fifth largest cable television company in the United States, and president of the Italian football club ACF Fiorentina since 2026. He succeeded his father, Rocco B. Commisso, in both positions following his death in January 2026.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Commisso was born on May 14, and grew up in the New York metropolitan area. He is the son of Rocco Benito Commisso and Catherine Commisso. He attended Millbrook School, graduating in 2000, and later studied civil engineering at Columbia University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree.[3]
He subsequently completed the Cable Executive Management Program at Harvard Business School, sponsored by the CTAM Educational Foundation.[4]
Corporate career
[edit]Commisso spent about two decades at Mediacom Communications, holding positions in corporate finance and management.[5] Later, as group vice president of corporate finance, he was responsible for the company's financial planning and capital structure. In the period of his fathers death, he was named vice chairman and served as interim chief executive officer from January 23, 2026, to February 6.[6][7]
On February 6, 2026, Mediacom's board of directors appointed Commisso chairman and chief executive officer.[8]
On August 25, 2026, Commisso appointed his mother, Catherine, as Vice Chair and Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Administration, a role that reported to him.[9]
ACF Fiorentina
[edit]After his father's acquisition of ACF Fiorentina in June 2019, Commisso joined the club's board of directors. He was situated in the club's administration during the development of the Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park training centre.[10]
On January 27, 2026, Fiorentina's board elected Commisso as president, ten days after the death of his father.[11] Mark Stephan was also confirmed as chief executive officer and Alessandro Ferrari as general manager.[12]
Commisso assumed responsibility for the club while Fiorentina were struggling in Serie A. The team was 18th in the league standings when he took office. Among his early decisions was appointing Fabio Paratici to the club's sporting department.[13] He also resumed the technical projects of men's first-team coach Paolo Vanoli and women's team coach Sebastian De La Fuente.[14] Vanoli’s contract was not extended, however, and on June 8, 2026, Fiorentina appointed Fabio Grosso as the new head coach on a 2 year deal.[15]
In June 2026, Commisso represented Fiorentina at an international event at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium in New York, attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former international players.[16] In August, he returned to Florence for celebrations marking the centenary of the club's founding. During the festivities, he expressed explicit support for the efforts to secure the renovation of the Stadio Artemio Franchi.[17] He also announced the retirement of the club’s number 10 shirt for the 2026–27 season in honor of former captain Giancarlo Antognoni.[18]
On August 25, 2026, the day after ACF Fiorentina’s 0–4 defeat to Roma in the opening match of the 2026–27 Serie A season, Commisso addressed supporters during a public centenary event in Florence. Reading remarks from his mobile phone in a mixture of English and Italian, he declared his attachment to the club with the words “Amo la Fiorentina.” As he concluded the statement, a spectator shouted an audible insult. The exchange was recorded and circulated widely on social media.[19][20]
