Maria Baranova (born April 5th, 1992 in Lohja, Finland)[1][2] is a Finnish Ukrainian ballet dancer. She is currently a prima ballerina at the Bavarian State Opera and Ballet.[3]

Early life

[edit]

Maria Baranova was born to Ukrainian parents in Finland, and started dancing at only three years old.[1][2] She spent her formative years at the Helsinki Dance Institute[3] and the French school of Helsinki.[2] After nine years at the Helsinki Dance Institute, Baranova participated in the reputable young dancers' competition Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland.[4] Baranova was successful and she got scouted by John Neumeier, the artistic director at the Hamburg Ballet School.[3]

Career

[edit]

Under the mentorship and guidance of Neumeier at the Hamburg Ballet School, Baranova rapidly progressed to her final year of study.[3] She completed her education with a prominent role in Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a piece choreographed by Neumeier and set to the music of Gustav Mahler. Baranova was a member of the Hamburg Ballet for three years, from 2009 to 2011, during which she took on numerous solo roles and participated in several of Neumeier's original works.[3]

In 2011, Baranova advanced to become a prima ballerina at the Finnish National Ballet.[5] She performed various solo roles in Helsinki, Finland, including in e.g. La Bayadère, Coppélia, Don Quijote, Manon, The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet and The Nutcracker.

In April 2015, Mikko Nissinen, the artistic director of the Boston Ballet invited Baranova to join his team.[6] She worked in the USA until 2019, when she was offered a prima ballerina position at her current employer, the Bavarian State Ballet.[5]
