The Ghaist's Warning (Danish: Svend Dyring) is a Scottish ballad based on a translation of a Danish ballad by Robert Jamieson, published by Sir Walter Scott in 1810.The ballad describes the story a group of children who are abused by their evil stepmother after the death of their biological mother. The dead mother then rises from the grave to warn the stepmother to stop mistreating the children. In Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights, Ellen (Nelly) Dean sings a portion of the ballad to Hareton Earnshaw.[1]
